HOUSTON -- A federal judge sentenced the former scouting director of the St. Louis Cardinals to nearly four years in prison Monday for hacking the Houston Astros player personnel database and email system in an unusual case of high-tech cheating involving two Major League Baseball clubs.Christopher Correa had pleaded guilty in January to five counts of unauthorized access of a protected computer from 2013 to at least 2014, the same year he was promoted to director of baseball development in St. Louis. He was fired last summer and now faces 46 months behind bars and a court order to pay $279,038 in restitution. He had faced up to five years in prison on each count. Correa will remain free on bond until he reports to federal prison within about six weeks.Correa read a letter in court before he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lynn N. Hughes and he said he was overwhelmed with remorse and regret for my actions that cost him his career and his home.I violated my values and it was wrong. I behaved shamefully, he said. The whole episode represents the worst thing Ive done in my life by far.The judge scolded Correa for his continued blaming of the Astros for his actions, saying Correa was acting like he was in middle school. Hughes did not elaborate on this information -- part of a sealed presentencing report -- but when he pleaded guilty in January, Correa had maintained he found proprietary Cardinals information in the Astros database.Hughes said Correas actions were primarily about a loss of trust. The loss is that every baseball team has much tighter security, making it harder for honest people to go about their daily lives ... A lot of little people whose lives were adversely affected by the cost taken to defend against people like you, Hughes said.MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred could discipline the Cardinals, possibly with a fine or a loss of draft picks, but has said only that he looked forward to getting details on the case from federal authorities. Now that the criminal process has been completed, Commissioner Manfred has asked the Department of Investigations to conduct a complete investigation of the facts in this matter, including requesting information from the appropriate law enforcement authorities, the league said in a statement. The commissioner hopes that the investigation can be completed promptly to put him in a position to take appropriate action.Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. had blamed the hack on roguish behavior by a handful of individuals. As we did with the government during its investigation, we intend to fully cooperate with the commissioners office in connection with its investigation so that this matter can finally be resolved, DeWitt said in a statement Monday.Kenneth Magidson, the U.S. Attorney in Houston, said he was pleased with the sentence, which he added concludes his offices investigation. No one else was charged in the case. This is a very serious offense and obviously Judge Hughes saw it as well, Magidson said.Giles Kibbe, the Astros general counsel, called it a sad day for baseball. He added that despite what Correa had claimed, the Astros were not using any proprietary information from the Cardinals. The Astros were the victim in this case, Kibbe said. The data breach was first reported in June 2014 when Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters the team had been the victim of hackers who accessed servers and published online months of internal trade talks. Luhnow had previously worked for the Cardinals.Federal prosecutors say the hacking cost the Astros about $1.7 million, taking into account how Correa used the Astros data to draft players. Kibbe said that in the two years Correa was in the Astros system, he accessed the teams network about 60 times. The FBI said Correa was able to gain access using a password similar to that used by a Cardinals employee who had to turn over his Cardinals-owned laptop to Correa along with the laptops password when he was leaving for a job with the Astros in 2011. The employee was not identified, though Luhnow left St. Louis for Houston in December of that year to become general manager.Prosecutors have said Correa in 2013 improperly downloaded a file of the Astros scouting list of every eligible player for that years draft. They say he also improperly viewed notes of trade discussions as well as a page that listed information such as potential bonus details, statistics and notes on recent performances and injuries by team prospects. The Astros rely heavily on sabermetrics in their evaluation of players and use a database called Ground Control to house proprietary information.Authorities say that after the Astros took security precautions involving Ground Control following a Houston Chronicle story about the database, Correa was able to still get into it. Authorities say he hacked the email system and was able to view 118 pages of confidential information, including notes of trade discussions, player evaluations and a 2014 team draft board that had not yet been completed.Luhnow was a key figure in the Cardinals own database, called Redbird. At least one former Cardinals employee -- Sig Mejdal, a former NASA employee and analytics expert -- had joined Luhnow in Houston.Luhnow has not commented in detail about the case, though hes denied using any of the Cardinals intellectual property or information from Redbird to create Houstons database. The Cardinals are among baseballs most successful franchises on and off the field. Only the New York Yankees have more World Series titles than the 11 won by St. Louis. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Leonard Williams spent some uncomfortable days in the film room at Southern California -- even after he had some huge performances.Ed Orgeron, the Trojans defensive line coach at the time, would usually gloss over all of the sacks and tackles for loss. Instead, he would get on Williams for some of the few mistakes he made.In the beginning, it was kind of hard for me to think that way, like, `Why is he only pointing out the bad plays? Williams recalled Friday. But then I realized its only because he wants me to play the best that I can. If hes just going to keep praising me, Im just going to stay average or just decent. If I keep working on what I can get better at, Im just going to keep growing. That approach by Orgeron, hired last week as LSUs head coach after serving as the interim, helped shape Williams into becoming a playmaker on Todd Bowles defense with the New York Jets.Williams leads the team with six sacks, 22 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles. His eight tackles for loss are tied with Muhammad Wilkerson for second, behind Sheldon Richardsons 10.Hes gotten a lot better and he can get so much better, Bowles said. Hes making a lot of progress. He doesnt have a ceiling, but he doesnt have a basement, either. Right now, hes steadily ascending.Thats high praise for Williams, especially because Bowles -- a bit like Orgeron -- doesnt routinely toss out kudos to his players.I mean, that sounds great having someone like coach Bowles whos the head coach of this program to have that much belief in me and I know that Im still a young player and I have a lot to grow, still, Williams said. Im definitely a player thats going to critique myself hardest. So, even after his 2 1/2-sack game in the season opener against Cincinnati, Williams was poring through the film to figure out how he couldve gotten more.Im going to see what I did bad and see my flaws and Im going to try to correct those, he said. Im not going to point out my good plays, Im going to point out my bad plays. I feel like thats one thing thats going to keep me progressing in this league.Just as Orgeron ingrained in him.Williams has been one of the few bright spots in the Jets dismal 3-8 season, building on a solid if unspectacular rookie year in which he had three sacks after being the No. 6 overall draft pick out of Southern California. Its just natural progression, Bowles said. As a rookie, you learn so much more after 16 games and coming back the next year, so mentally we expected him to be a little better than he was last year.ddddddddddddWilliams attributes his improvement to an increased comfort in knowing what he needs to do whenever he steps on the field, as opposed to needing to think first and then react -- which is common with most rookies.I think Ive definitely progressed as a player with sacks and TFLs and stuff like that, Williams said. I know thats one thing I harped on coming out of last season, my rookie year, was getting more sacks and TFLs and the stats that people like to see. With that comfortability level that I have now, its been able to let me go out there and play the way I want to play.Williams has been facing more double-teams from opponents lately, which has led in part to him not getting any sacks in the last four games. This guy, defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers said, is still not even tapping where he can be, in my opinion.Williams could be in for a good night -- on the field and in the film room -- on Monday night when the Jets take on the Indianapolis Colts, who are second in the NFL with 38 sacks allowed. Only Cleveland, with 45, has allowed more.Andrew Luck, who has been sacked an NFL-high 35 times, is expected back at quarterback for the Colts after missing last week with a concussion. They say the O-line has been struggling, but mostly what I see is that the majority of the sacks are just from the defense executing blitzes and pressures and stuff like that, Williams said. One thing Ive noticed with Luck is that hes not afraid to hold the ball and try to break some tackles in the pocket, and I feel thats one of the reasons the sacks have been coming up.Game notes WR Brandon Marshall (foot, knee), WR Jalin Marshall (concussion), LB Lorenzo Mauldin (ankle), DT Steve McLendon (hamstring), S Calvin Pryor (concussion) and WR Devin Smith (illness) all sat out practice. LB Bruce Carter (quadriceps), RT Breno Giacomini (back, shoulder), CB Nick Marshall (ankle) and CB Marcus Williams (ankle) were limited. ... C Nick Mangold, who has missed four games with a sprained ankle, fully practiced for the second straight day and might play Monday night.---For more NFL coverage: and Chiefs Jerseys China Cheap Nike Chargers Jerseys Cheap Nike Raiders Jerseys Wholesale Cowboys Jerseys China Cheap Nike Giants Jerseys Philadelphia Eagles Jerseys For Sale Wholesale Redskins Jerseys China Cheap Nike Lions Jerseys Packers Jerseys China Cheap Vikings Jerseys Free Shipping Cheap Panthers Jerseys Hoodies Cheap Saints Jerseys Free Shipping Cheap Nike Buccaneers Jerseys Cardinals Jerseys China Cheap Rams Jerseys Hoodies Cheap Nike 49ers Jerseys Seahawks Jerseys China Bears Jerseys China Cheap Nike Bills Jerseys Ravens Jerseys China Wholesale Falcons Jerseys China ' ' '
