rlong turf stakes, he gave Antonucci her biggest win as a trainer and Russell his first stakes victory since he resumed his care Antworten

BENSALEM, Pa.-- Doctor J Dub scored a big victory for trainer Jena Antonucci, jockey Sheldon Russell, and owner Drawing Away Stable in the Grade 3, $300,000 Turf Monster at Parx Racing on Monday. Not only did Doctor J Dub score a $49.80 upset in the five-furlong turf stakes, he gave Antonucci her biggest win as a trainer and Russell his first stakes victory since he resumed his career in July following an eight-month injury-related absence.Doctor J Dub was claimed by Drawing Away Stable for $16,000 at Gulfstream Park in January. He made his first seven starts for Maria Borell before being transferred to Antonucci.Coming into the race, Doctor J Dub had been beaten in his last three starts in second-level optional-claiming races. The last two came in off-the-turf races at Saratoga. You cant enter on odds or other peoples opinions, Antonucci said. The horse was doing good, and we had weather delays at Saratoga twice where our races were taken off the turf.In the Turf Monster, Doctor J Dub engaged 3-1 Pool Winner for the early lead, drew clear on the far turn, and then lasted by a half-length over runner-up Two Notch Road. Pool Winner hung on for third, a length farther back.Power Alert, the 8-5 favorite, stumbled badly at the start. He finished strongly from well out in the track but could never make up the ground he lost leaving the gate and finished fifth.Doctor J Dub was timed in 58.73 seconds. His victory was the first in a graded stakes for Antonucci, who has been training since 2010.Russell suffered a serious shoulder injury in a training accident at Laurel Park last November. Following surgery and rehab, he was ready to begin his comeback in June, but his doctors advised him to give his shoulder another month to mend. This certainly is a big win, Russell said. I was away for such a long time. It was a huge surgery, but my shoulder feels fine now.Russell has long been one of the top riders in Maryland and is now 11 for 82 in his comeback. Doctor J Dubs victory may be just what it takes to jump-start his business.Greenwood Cup: Scuba takes marathon on leadScuba galloped the competition into the ground in the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup, winning with something left under Kendrick Carmouche. The Grade 3, $200,000 Greenwood Cup was the first stakes win for Scuba, a 5-year-old son of Tapit.Scuba moved up to take a clear lead soon after the start. Carmouche kept Scuba far off the inner rail throughout while clipping off fractions of 25.73 seconds, 51.55, 1:18.50, and 1:44.62. He crossed the wire five lengths in front.Scuba paid $4.40 and completed the course in 2:32.76. Hawaakom finished second, 12 lengths ahead of Bodhisattva in third.Scuba, trained by Brendan Walsh in Kentucky, is now 8 for 28 in his career. In his prior start, he was second behind Grade 1 winner Bradester in the Monmouth Cup, a Grade 2 race at 1-1/16 miles.Turf Amazon: Lady Shipman wins comfortablyLady Shipman turned in a workmanlike performance to comfortably win the $200,000 Turf Amazon under Joel Rosario.Lady Shipman prompted the early pace outside of 30-1 Your Place or Mine, took control nearing the stretch of the five-furlong turf race, and then held Everything Lovely safe to score by a length. She broke so sharp, I just let her go, Rosario said. She is a beautiful filly.Lady Shipman, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, paid $2.60 to win in the seven-horse field and was timed in 58.06 seconds.Everything Lovely, part of a Kathleen DeMasi-trained entry, saved ground behind the early leaders, came outside horses for the drive but could make little headway in the final furlong. Sunnysammi finished third at 17-1, 1 1/4 lengths behind Everything Lovely.Joya Real, who was considered the stronger part of the DeMasi entry, finished sixth.Randall Lowe, the owner and breeder of Lady Shipman, was in from Las Vegas for the race and said hed like to go back to the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint with Lady Shipman. Last year at Keeneland, Lady Shipman finished second by a neck to Mongolian Saturday in the BC Turf Sprint, which was run at 5-1/2 furlongs. This years race will be run Nov. 5 at 6-1/2 furlongs down the hill at Santa Anita.Lady Shipman is now 13 for 19 in her career with earnings of $896,242. Swans skipper Kieren Jack is expecting the first Sydney AFL finals derby will ignite passion in a new generation of Australian rules fans, like he experienced in another big match in the city 13 years ago,A crowd of close to 60,000 is expected to attend the 11th and most significant Sydney derby yet.The last Australian rules match at ANZ Stadium, between minor premiers Sydney and maiden finalist and fourth-placed GWS, is set to give the code its biggest push in the harbour city for many years.Jack likens its potential to another massive game he attended at the same venue as a 16-year-old in 2003.In front of 71,019 spectators, the Swans lost to the mighty Brisbane Lions, who in the next match would complete a hat-trick of premiership wins.I can still vividly recall going to a Sydney Swans-Brisbane Lions preliminary final in 2003 and thats what ignites the passion, Jack said. For a lot of young kids and supporters out there it will ignite some passion this weekend.JJack is encouraged by the progress Australian rules is making in a city that was initially resistant to its charms.ddddddddddddIts clearly still behind some of the major codes, but were starting to see some real inroads, Jack said. From the junior level all the way up and the academies are doing that, so its very promising I think. However, he doesnt expect his code of choice to supplant rugby league, the sport in which his father Garry excelled, as the leading football code in Sydney. It would be pretty tough, I would have thought, he said.It (Sydney) is a very competitive market, but what you are doing is allowing young kids now with different choices.I think the facilities and the infrastructure that the AFL are putting in place will only encourage more kids to go down that path, so who knows where it will end up in 10, 20 years time.
