When I was growing up, they threw the ball around. They scored points. They competed against some of the best teams in the Big Ten each and every year, and they were exciting to watch. As a fan, you like to see teams that score points and do some fun things.Thats exactly the playbook he is bringing to West Lafayette after using it to compile a 30-10 record over the last three seasons at Western Kentucky. The offense averaged 44.6 points and 526.2 yards and his quarterbacks completed 69.2 percent of their passes, threw for 356.6 yards per game and a total of 131 touchdowns.New athletic director Mike Bobinski thought Brohm was the perfect fit at a school dubbed the Cradle of Quarterbacks and one that has a returning starter in David Blough.The new style will be a stark contrast from the past four seasons under former coach Darrell Hazell and Gerad Parker, who went 0-6 as interim coach after taking over for the fired Hazell in October. In a statement before the news conference, Bobinski called Brohm one of the most innovative offensive masterminds in college football.Blough concurred after doing his own research over the weekend.I saw at the championship game and that they had 38 points with 10 minutes left in the second quarter, Blough said with a smile. You see how they develop quarterbacks and thats exciting.Excitement has been waning at Purdue for most of the past decade.The Boilermakers went 9-39 over the last four seasons under Hazell and Parker, havent been to a bowl game since 2012 and have only produced one winning season in nine years. Plus, they tied a school record by losing their fourth straight to rival Indiana less than two weeks ago. The stadium has seen its share of empty seats.Bobinski believes a new coach with an entertaining style can end that slide.The energy, the enthusiasm, the passion that his teams play with, the style that they play thats aggressive, that forces the tempo, forces the issue, Bobinski said. As Ive watched Coach Brohms teams play over the years, and particularly this year, thats what I saw. I saw a team that really went after it both sides of the ball and played with great enthusiasm and didnt take a play off ever, and I think fans will recognize that. Our fans certainly will appreciate that, and once the success comes along with that, itll be all the better.Western Kentucky said it is already beginning to search for Brohms successor. He worked out for six different NFL teams, playing two seasons in San Francisco. He started coaching in 2002 with the Louisville Fire of the af2 league.Brohm returned to his alma mater as quarterbacks coach from 2003-06 and served as assistant head coach in 2007 and 2008In 2009, he took over as quarterbacks coach at Florida Atlantic in 2009 before spending the next two seasons in the same role at Illinois. Then Francisco Rodriguez coughed up five runs in the ninth. That kicked off a brutal three-game losing streak in which their staff allowed 24 runs in the next 19 innings. And the upshot is, theyd dropped to two games back of Baltimore with six to play.As ugly as those past three losses had been and as bleak as their 2-14 record against Cleveland might have appeared heading into Tuesday, the Tigers are now in better shape than you might have thought.On Tuesday, Justin Verlander & Co. rocked the Tribe 12-0 before Miguel Cabreras heroics carried the Tigers to another win Wednesday night. And the Mets have never needed him more.But no team faces greater pressure than the Mets do to get this over with fast. Suppose they have to burn Syndergaard on Sunday? Is that crazy, or what? Well, its also relevant because they have four more home games stretched before them the rest of the way, against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.Games to circle: the dazzling Alex Reyes against the underrated Dan Straily on Thursday. (The Cardinals have hit .176 against Straily this year.) Then Carlos Martinez?faces Pirates phenom Tyler Glasnow on Friday. The Dodgers (37-40 on the road but 53-28 at home) are just two games behind the Nationals (47-30 home, 45-36 road) for the second seed -- which determines who holds home-field advantage in their first-round matchup next week. And L.A. gets that edge if it finishes with the same record. In the AL, not much separates the Red Sox (46-32 home and 46-34 road), Rangers (52-26 home, 42-39 road) and Indians (53-28 home, 38-39 road) in the late-breaking three-way tussle for the No. 1 seed. The Indians lose out on every potential tiebreaker formula. But the Boston-Texas tiebreaker depends on division games this week, as they split their five games head-to-head.? 20 is plenty: In Tampa Bay, Rays ace Chris Archer started the season dreaming of winning 20 games. Hes suddenly in danger of becoming the first pitcher to lose 20 in a season since Mike Maroth dethroned Brian Kingmans 23-year reign as the last 20-game loser back in 2003. Since Maroth did it for the Tigers, no pitcher has ever even been allowed to start a game after reaching 19 losses. But as of now, Archer is still scheduled to pitch Thursday against the White Sox. And his eight criminally unsupported starts (six-plus innings, no more than one run of support while on the mound) are the second-most in the league.
