Great Britain will have a rider in the Olympic mountain bike race after all as Grant Ferguson was belatedly selected on Monday. The Olympic team was named on June 24, with no mountain bike rider named by the British Olympic Association. But 22-year-old Ferguson, who has a best finish of 15th in the cross-country World Championships, has earned his place in Rio as the 27th member of the cycling squad.Ferguson said: Im thrilled to have been selected to represent Great Britain at the Rio Olympic Games thanks to the support of British Cycling.I was fortunate enough to be on the BOAs Olympic Ambition Programme in 2012 and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience so to be able to actually compete this time is really exciting and I cant wait to get out there.British Cycling and the BOA also clarified the appeals process over non-selection.Two undisclosed riders appealed unsuccessfully. Jess Varnish opted not to appeal after being dropped from the track team in April, in an incident which escalated and prompted the resignation of technical director Shane Sutton.Dani King, Olympic gold medallist on the track at London 2012 and omitted from the road this time, appealed, while Steve Cummings is among those to speak out about his non-selection.Track rider Andy Tennant was magnanimous after his omission, while Matt Crampton and others have kept their counsel.A joint British Cycling and BOA statement read: Riders eligible to appeal were contacted by British Cycling on June 27 and were able to take advantage of a 48-hour appeals window in line with the process available to programme riders. Two appeals were received and considered under British Cyclings major event selection appeals procedure but were unsuccessful.
