STANFORD, Calif. -- Now heres a scary thought for defenses facing Stanford this season. One year after shattering Barry Sanders 27-year-old record for all-purpose yards in a season, Heisman Trophy runner-up Christian McCaffrey is back for his junior season as a significantly better player, according to his coach.Im not trying to say hell get more yards this year than he did last year. Thats not what Im talking about, coach David Shaw said. Im talking about a young man whos maturing. Hes a year older. His body is still maturing. Hes stronger, hes faster. He knows the offense better. Its been exciting knowing how much easier things are for him and also how hard he works. Its a fun thing to watch. It will be hard to top what McCaffrey did last season when he ran for 2,019 yards, added 645 yards receiving and 1,200 on returns while scoring 15 touchdowns and setting the NCAA record with 3,864 all-purpose yards -- 614 more than Sanders had in his Heisman Trophy-winning 1988 season. But McCaffrey sees plenty of room for improvement and has spent the offseason becoming bigger, faster and more knowledgeable. He is so well-versed in Stanfords playbook in year three in college that he knows the assignments of all 11 offensive players on almost every play.Thats something Ive tried to harp on, he said. Im not perfect on all of them. But definitely knowing what theyre going to do makes my job a lot easier, especially when youre doing a bunch of things on the field. You have to know a lot of things and the more you know, the better you play.Few players have ever done as much on the football field as McCaffrey did last year. He was a top runner both inside and when he got out in space. He was Stanfords leading receiver as well, beating defenses out of the backfield or when he lined up outside. He was a dangerous returner who turned mundane special teams plays into must-watch events and he even threw two touchdown passes.McCaffrey showed no signs of slowing down last season despite more than 400 touches on offense and special teams, gaining 461 yards in the Pac-12 title game against USC and 368 in a Rose Bowl victory against Iowa. With a new quarterback running the offense and three new starters on the offensive line, McCaffrey may have to carry an even bigger load this season and Shaw believes his body can handle it.Were going to find every way humanly possible to get him the ball, similar to what we did a year ago, Shaw said. I dont worry about stuff like that. This kid is a football player. He does a lot of different things and well let him do whatever he can to help us win football games.McCaffrey came into last season as a bit of an unknown after getting limited opportunities in Stanfords complicated offense as a freshman. That wont be the case this year when defenses will have a target on his back all season.McCaffrey has enjoyed the attention that has come from his stardom that allowed him to go the ESPYs, where he got to meet several celebrities.Hes still the same down to earth guy, receiver Michael Rector said. Hes still a goof ball in the locker room. Its been interesting to see with all the success and all the praise hes been getting hes been getting even more hungry. People can sit back and relax but he chose to get better, take more upon himself and push himself to be a better player. I think that will show this season. One of the main differences for McCaffrey this season is that he is taking on a bigger leadership role. With four-year starting quarterback Kevin Hogan in the NFL, McCaffrey was the natural player to fill that void. Before the teams first practice of fall camp, McCaffrey talked to the team about the importance of setting high standards if the team is going to achieve its goal of repeating as Pac-12 champions and possibly make the College Football Playoff. The message resonated with his teammates.Christian is just a born leader, receiver Francis Owusu said. You see the way he walks, the way he talks. You can just feel an energy that he emits thats so positive for our team. We watch him practice so hard and we all want to do that. The way he walks and talks is the way we want to do it. Chaussure Nike Air Max Suisse . Booth picked up 65 caps after making her national team debut in 2002 at the age of 17. Arsenal failed to take full advantage of its main rivals stumbles on Saturday as substitute Gerard Deulofeu levelled with a hard shot from a tight angle in the 84th minute to give Everton a deserved point. Ahead of a crucial fortnight that will see them play against Napoli in the Champions League, Manchester City and Chelsea, Arsenal leads by five points ahead of Liverpool and Chelsea. MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers seemed to make more mistakes than contact Monday night.Jonathan Villar let in the winning run with a throwing error and Milwaukee set a franchise record for a nine-inning game with 19 strikeouts, allowing the St. Louis Cardinals to escape with a 6-5 victory. With two on and two outs in the ninth inning, Yadier Molina dropped down a bunt. Tyler Thornburg (5-5) went to third for a force out, but Villars throw to first base was wild, allowing Stephen Piscotty to score from second. He just made a bad throw, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. We talked about that situation out there and the possibility for a double play. He just rushed it a little bit probably. The big out was to get the out at third. We just didnt make the play.It was Villars 25th error of the season and his eighth since moving from shortstop to third base to accommodate rookie Orlando Arcia.Put pressure on them, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. Thats it. Make them make plays. After being swept in a four-game series by Pittsburgh over the weekend, the Brewers squandered a chance to win the series opener with St. Louis.Carlos Martinez struck out a career-high 13 over six innings, with the Brewers only mustering a run on an RBI single by Scooter Gennett in the sixth.I really tried working hard on my breaking ball and thats what I tried to stay focused on, Martinez said through a translator. I didnt do anything different. I know that the balls can go far (in Miller Park), and I know that theyre looking for a four-seamer, so I just try to switch it up and confuse them.Once Martinez left the game, Milwaukee rallied for four runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead.Arcia led off the inning with a solo shot off Matt Bowman. Villar added an RBI double and Gennett gave the Brewers the lead with a run-scoring infield ssingle.ddddddddddddHowever, Milwaukee squandered a chance to extend its lead. After Kevin Siegrist walked Hernan Perez to walk in a run, Miguel Socolovich (1-0) came on to strike out Chris Carter and get Kirk Nieuwenhuis to pop out to shortstop.Corey Knebel then surrendered just his second home run of the season, a two-run blast to Randal Grichuk in the eighth.Villars error wasnt the only costly defensive blunder by the Brewers, as catcher Martin Maldonado botched a run down in the fourth inning that led to a run.You have to do a lot of things right against these teams, Counsell said. We did a nice job coming back, especially with how Martinez threw the ball the first six innings. Theres a sliver lining that were still fighting, for sure, but winning games against these teams ... its not easy.Jedd Gyorko and Kolten Wong each hit solo home runs off Brewers starter Zach Davies. The right-hander matched a career high with nine strikeouts but allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings. It was good to get back to a four-pitch mix, Davies said. I was trying to get early outs in the early innings. So from that standpoint, I was happy with (my outing).TRAINERS ROOMBrewers: Brewers RHP Junior Guerra (right elbow) will return from the disabled list to start Friday in Pittsburgh.UP NEXTCardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright (9-8, 4.67 ERA) will look to continue his career dominance of the Brewers on Tuesday. The veteran is 13-8 with a 2.23 ERA in 33 games against Milwaukee.Brewers: RHP Wily Peralta (5-9, 5.87) will make his 18th start of the season when he faces the Cardinals on Tuesday. Peralta is 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA in four starts since being recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Aug. 8. ' ' '
