DETROIT -- The Minnesota Twins are finally seeing the Hector Santiago they expected when they acquired him from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline.Santiago held the Detroit Tigers to one run in 5 2/3 innings on Thursday as the Twins earned a split of the four-game series with a 5-1 win.Hector had to dance out of trouble a few times, but he did a nice job, Twins manager Paul Molitor said. If he pitches like this, his spot with us next year will take care of itself.Santiago lost his first four starts with the Twins, posting a 10.89 ERA, but hes 2-0 in the last four with a 1.82 ERA.I made some adjustments when I got here, but I ended up leaving a bunch of pitches over the plate, he said. Now Im back to trying to throw good pitches, not just getting strike one.Santiago only got one groundball out and three strikeouts.I had really good command of the fastball, so I was able to keep jamming guys up and in, he said. They kept popping it up, so I kept throwing it.The Tigers can little afford losses in the crowded AL wild-card race. Detroit came into the series with a 10-2 record against Minnesota. This is obviously not what we wanted, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Any time you lose four out of seven, it isnt a good homestand.Mike Pelfrey (4-10) lost in his first major-league appearance since July 31. He started the game with a 60-pitch limit, but only lasted 36, giving up four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. The Twins took the lead in the second on Max Keplers RBI single, and he moved to third when Miguel Cabrera missed a pick-off attempt. Eduardo Escobar singled to make it 2-0, and Eddie Rosario beat out a bunt single.Juan Centeno bunted the runners over, and Pelfrey retired Byron Buxton. That brought up Brian Dozier with two on, two out and first base open. Despite his torrid numbers in the second half, Ausmus decided to pitch to him. With the bases loaded, you dont have any room to maneuver, he said. If he grounds out to third, no one is asking me about it.Instead, Dozier lined a soft single to left to give the Twins a 4-0 lead and bring Blaine Hardy out of the bullpen. Our guys were going to attack Mikes fastball, Molitor said of Pelfrey, who spent the last three seasons with the Twins. That helped us get those two early runs, and then Dozier came up with that huge hit to get the lead from two to four. The Tigers had two runners on in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but Santiago escaped all three jams without allowing a run.TRAINERS ROOMTwins: 3B Miguel Sano flew back to Minnesota to have more tests run on his sore back. Sano left Mondays game, and said that the problem hasnt improved. He will miss the weekend series against the Mets, but could return next week when the Twins return home.OLYMPIC WEEK CONCLUDESFor the fourth day in a row, the Tigers had a Rio Olympic medalist throw out the ceremonial first pitch. On Thursday, it was swimmer Connor Jaeger, who won silver in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Jaeger swam for Michigan.PITCHING WOESWith the Tigers fighting for a playoff spot, they have been badly let down by their starting pitching. In the last three games of the Twins series, Pelfrey, Anibal Sanchez and Matt Boyd combined to allow 17 runs in 9 1/3 innings.UP NEXTTwins: Travel to New York for a three-game weekend series against the Mets. Friday night, Minnesotas Jose Berrios (2-6. 9.27) faces New Yorks Bartolo Colon (13-7, 3.27).Tigers: Head to Cleveland for a three-game series and their last chance to get back into the AL Central race. Rookie of the Year favorite Michael Fulmer (10-6, 2.76) goes up against Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber (16-9, 3.05) in the opener. Stepehen Curry Shoes Clearance . Philadelphia is 2-0 against the Senators this season and scored five goals in each victory. The Flyers recorded a 5-0 win in Ottawa on Nov. 12 and then earned a 5-2 home decision on Nov. 19. The Flyers have claimed three straight and four of the last five encounters with the Sens overall and Philly has won two in a row and three of its past four tests in Canadas capital city. Stephen Curry 1 Low Shoes . Howard Ganz, an MLB lawyer, said in a letter to U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos that Rodriguezs claims do not come "remotely close" to what is needed to overturn an arbitration decision in federal court. http://www.curryshoesclearance.com/ua-curry-6-shoes.html . Anthony Calvillo, through 20 CFL seasons, was frequently invincible and largely stoic in the heat of competition. But underneath the professional exterior he was, and is, compellingly human. Curry 6 Cheap . -- Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis was charged Thursday with driving while intoxicated, a day after he was suspended for an NFL substance-abuse policy violation. Richmonds spirited display against Collingwood was just the tonic Damien Hardwick and his players needed after a tumultuous week but the coach wont use the 15-point win to paper over the cracks in the Tigers disappointing season.Serious questions were asked of Hardwick, his players and the board that reappointed him for another two years after thumpings by Hawthorn and Greater Western Sydney, and the sense of relief was plain to see in the rooms after the 14.8 (92) to 11.11 (77) win at the MCG on Friday night. The coach was mobbed by jubilant players following the club song but he was careful not to get swept away in the moment.Within club land we dont ride the emotional rollercoasters that external people do, Hardwick said.We realise weve been under-performing this year, absolutely, but our process doesnt change. We prepare the same way and this week was no different to last week, and itll be no different next week.Emotional rollercoasters we leave to external sources and we just worry about what we can control and thats trying to win as many football games as we can.And while one win doesnt wash away the pain of an underwhelming season, there was a lot to like about this one.Dustin Martin was prolific again, Alex Rance had a huge influence in the back half, Jack Riewoldt kicked four goals from limited opportunities and several young Tigers played important cameos. But the story didnt look like it would have a happy ending for Richmond after they conceded the first four goals of the game.ddddddddddddHow many were from free kicks do you reckon? Hardwick said.Maybe four, which was a bit disappointing.Despite Hardwicks displeasure at the umpiring early on, Collingwood smashed his side 13-3 in the clearances in the first quarter to lead by 14 points at the first break and another week of yellow-and-black headlines loomed. But they showed the sort of fight and spirit that has been lacking too often this season to eke out a six-point lead at halftime that became a 12-point advantage at the last break.Pies skipper Scott Pendlebury looked set to drag his side over line when he kicked the first goal of the last quarter but he limped out of the game soon after with an ankle injury that proved costly.A goal to James Aish put Collingwood back in front with under 10 minutes left, but Martin, who finished with a game-high 34 possessions, was important as the Tigers held their nerve to kick the last three goals to secure a much-needed win.Pies coach Nathan Buckley didnt hide his displeasure with the performance a week after a win over finals-bound West Coast. It was really disappointing, Buckley said. The first 10 minutes looked great ... then we proceeded to play the worst three quarters that weve played all year and we were still two points up with eight minutes to play.It was a disappointing night all around.
