COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- After opening the season with a pair of tight victories, Maryland really needed a stress-free matchup against an inferior opponent. That is precisely what the Terrapins got.Damonte Dodd had 13 points and 10 rebounds, L.G. Gill scored 15 and Maryland cruised past St. Marys 93-45 on Thursday night. Its nice to have something like this, coach Mark Turgeon said after the Terps (3-0) overwhelmed their in-state Division III opponent. The blowout came after the Terrapins squeezed past American and won an emotional thriller on Tuesday at Georgetown. We didnt put any prep into it. Thats really the grind of the season, Turgeon said. We put so much into American and Georgetown, it was nice just to show up and play a game.Turgeon started three freshmen, along with Dodd and junior guard Melo Trimble. Two of those first-year players, Anthony Cowan and Justin Jackson, combined for 10 of Marylands first 11 points.Ten different players scored in the first half for the Terrapins, who led 13-2, 21-3 and 26-6 before an 18-4 run made it 44-10.The 6-foot-11 Dodd is three inches taller than anyone on the St. Marys roster. He dominated the lane on both ends and had three blocked shots. It feels good, Dodd said. It was fun to be out there. They tried their hardest. They had some really good players. But it was nice to have a blowout and get our rhythm on defense and offense. This really helps us a lot going into the next game.Trimble, the star of the team, contributed seven points in 15 minutes. Freshman Kevin Huerter and Jaylen Brantley each scored 11.Tre Mouton scored 16 for the Seahawks (1-1), a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. St. Marys was coming off a 95-66 win over Penn State Altoona, but this obviously represented a huge leap in the level of competition.I told the guys to be proud of the effort you put out there, coach Chris Harney said. You never know how bad it could have been. We could have been walking out of here (having lost) 150-10. Clearly, it was two different teams as far as size and skill. The Seahawks opened by going 1 for 7 from the floor with seven turnovers and did not make successive baskets until midway through the second half. This marked the fourth time in 12 years under Harney that the Seahawks faced a team higher than Division III. Theyre 0-4 in those games.YOUTH IS SERVEDSt. Marys: Because the Seahawks are in rebuilding mode, Harney was particularly pleased with his teams performance. We dont have any seniors, we have a pretty young team. This for us was really preparation for our season in Division III.Maryland: The freshmen shined -- Jackson had 10 rebounds, Cowan finished with eight points and seven assists, and Huerter led the team with five field goals. But Turgeon was most impressed with sophomore center Ivan Bender, who had seven rebounds and six points in 18 minutes. Hes the most improved player on our roster, the coach said.THE TAKEAWAYSt. Marys: The Seahawks took a beating, but at least they got to play in a major college arena before resuming a schedule that includes road games against Wesley and Christopher Newport.Maryland: The Terrapins received a modest workout in a game situation. The low-pressure scenario enabled Turgeon to shuffle his freshmen and work on plays that will be useful in the future.UP NEXTSt. Marys faces Baldwin Wallace on Saturday in the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational.Maryland hosts another in-state foe, Towson, on Sunday afternoon. Swell Bottle Wood Collection . After Mondays hard-fought loss, the wait seemed longer than usual. Getting set to go their separate ways for a short Christmas break, the Raptors coach credited his team for their effort on a seemingly impossible three-game road trip, urging them to build on that success when they get back to work at the end of the week. Kerry, Two nights after the Scott-Eriksson incident in Buffalo, the Bruins returned home to play San Jose. In that game, Zdeno Chara put a check on Tommy Wingels that clearly targeted his head. Swell Bottle Brush NZ .Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres have recalled forward Kevin Porter and defenceman Chad Ruhwedel from the minors as part of a five-player roster shuffle made by the NHLs worst team. Swell Drink Bottles NZ . Aaron Harrison scored a 22 points for Kentucky (6-1), which has won four in a row following a Nov. 12 loss to current No. 1 Michigan State. Julius Randle overcame a scoreless first half and added his sixth double-double in as many games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. SEATTLE -- A night that began with cheers for new Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. echoing through Safeco Field ended with chants for Shawn OMalley, a kid that grew up a few hours southeast of Seattle idolizing the Hall of Famer.A little surreal for OMalley? Yep. Deserved? Absolutely. The fact it ended like that, it just seemed like a Griffey type of night, OMalley said. A home run to go up, late in the innings, it was just fitting.OMalley capped Seattles comeback with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Mariners rallied from a four-run deficit for an 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.A few hours after the Mariners retired Griffeys No. 24 during an emotional pregame ceremony, OMalley sent another charge through Safeco Field. OMalley turned on an 0-1 pitch from Deolis Guerra and drove it into the right-field seats for his second home run of the season.Moments later, OMalley made a backhanded stop deep in the hole at shortstop to get Andrelton Simmons for the first out of the eighth inning and briefly Safeco Field began chanting OMalleys name.It was pretty hard to miss. It was pretty loud, OMalley said. That was pretty special, pretty cool. Never had that happen before. The conclusion to the day was celebratory for the Mariners, but it certainly didnt start that way. Seattle fell behind 3-0 on Mike Trouts 21st home run of the season in the first inning, and trailed 5-1 after Trouts RBI triple and Albert Pujols sacrifice fly in the third.Arguably the best center fielder of this generation was doing his best to upstage a night belonging to one of the best center fielders ever. But the Mariners chipped away at the deficit, taking the words of Griffey from his pregame speech when he looked at the Seattle dugout and told this current crop to keep fighting as it hangs on the fringe of the wild-card race. Guillermo Heredia hit the first home run of his career leading off the third inning and Franklin Gutierrez added a two-run shot in the fifth to pull within 6-4.Seattle missed an opportunity in the sixth inning by leaving the bases loaded. Reliever Mike Morin feell behind 3-0 to Gutierrez, who was given the freedom to swing and popped up to shortstop for the second out.dddddddddddd Robinson Cano then popped out to right field to end the threat. The Mariners finally took advantage of the shaky pitching in the seventh. Jose Valdez (0-1) opened the seventh getting Nelson Cruz, but then issued three straight walks to load the bases. Valdez was called up from the minors on Saturday. He looked good against Cruz. He threw some really good breaking balls but then just lost his release point, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.Leonys Martins sacrifice fly off Guerra pulled Seattle within 6-5 before OMalleys shot.Confidence has gotten into him, Seattle manager Scott Servais said of OMalley. He believes hes a big league player and I think youre seeing it in front of our eyes.BULLPEN PICKUPDrew Storen (2-3) got the final out of the seventh to pick up the victory and Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his fourth save. But the star for Seattle was Cody Martin, who pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Taijuan Walker. Martin allowed only two hits, one of them an infield single.Everybody is having a good time and were like a little family out there, Martin said. We just have a great time during the games.ROSTER SHUFFLEAngels: RHP Tim Lincecum was designated for assignment on Saturday after giving up six runs in the first inning a night earlier. Lincecum was 2-6 with a 9.16 ERA in nine starts with the Angels.Mariners: Seattle made a pair of trades, acquiring Arquimedes Caminero from Pittsburgh and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte from Toronto for players to be named later. Caminero is expected to report to Seattle on Monday, while Venditte is headed for Triple-A.UP NEXTAngels: Matt Shoemaker (6-11) will go for his second straight victory. Over his last 15 starts, Shoemaker has a 2.85 ERA.Mariners: James Paxton (3-5) looks to build on his last start when he allowed one run in eight innings against Boston but ended up being left out of the decision.
