CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The infamous on-field brawl in 2006 between Miami and FIUs football teams was over in a couple of minutes. The fallout and often-frosty relationship between the schools has lingered for about a decade.Times are changing. For the first time since 2008, Miami and FIU have scheduled baseball games -- four games in the upcoming 2017 season, two at the Hurricanes stadium and two on the Panthers campus about nine miles away. Its just the latest example of an athletic reconnection between these neighboring universities that want to rekindle relationships in many sports, and are taking steps on that front. Its good for our students, Miami athletic director Blake James said. With so much of our travel, we have to get on a plane, were missing class, all those different types of things. When we can set up games that make sense for our teams that dont require our kids to miss class, you take advantage of them when you can.The baseball games set at Miami are March 7 and April 26; the ones at FIU are Feb. 22 and March 8. It wasnt just the brawl that led to a rift between those programs; Miami coach Jim Morris and now-former FIU coach Turtle Thomas havent gotten along for years, for reasons neither ever cared to explain publicly.Miami and FIU baseball played 115 times from 1973 through 2008. They played an NCAA regional game in 2015, but other than that, nothing until now.Our early schedule is designed to both challenge our team and get us ready for Conference USA play, new FIU coach Mervyl Melendez said. We are excited about our home schedule. Our fans will be able to watch us play very good opponents including the University of Miami for the first time at home since 2008.Theres financial and academic benefits to Miami-FIU games. Travel costs are minimal, plus the visiting team can play a road game and be back on its own campus in minutes instead of hours. And those with early morning classes may appreciate them not being preceded by a middle-of-the-night long bus ride home from another school.Miami averaged 376 miles, round-trip, to midweek baseball games at Florida Gulf Coast and Central Florida last season. What would have been a 110-mile round trip to Florida Atlantic was cancelled by bad weather.A round trip to FIU is only 18 miles.I think its great, James said. As long as it makes sense for our programs, Ill be supportive of those things. I didnt see any reason why we shouldnt be playing.Miamis womens basketball team -- ranked No. 14 in this weeks Top 25 -- put FIU back on the schedule last season after seven years of not playing, and will go to the Panthers arena for a game on Dec. 16. The schools played in volleyball this season for the first time since 2010, and the football teams are likely to play again in 2019. Theyve also met recently in womens soccer, swimming and track.Theres been no Miami-FIU football game since 2007, one year after that brawl led to the suspensions of 31 players.I think it should be a great game, said newly hired FIU football coach Butch Davis, the former Miami coach from 1996 through 2000.Hydro Flask 24 Oz Standard Mouth . Following a lopsided 5-2 loss against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night, Paul MacLean told reporters that "theres a lack of focus, theres a lack of leadership and theres a lack of preparation" with his struggling team. That came on the heels of Bryan Murray taking the unusual step of going into the locker room at the Prudential Center and addressing the players himself. Hydro Flask 32 Oz Black Friday . The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. The Czechs pulled two back in the ninth, but Shusters team of third Jeff Isaacson, second Jared Zezel and lead John Landsteiner ended with another point to secure the last Olympic berth on offer. .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. Hydro Flask 40 Oz Straw Lid . Kyle Denbrook, a soccer player from Saint Marys University, took the CIS male athlete of the week honour. Stanley, a fourth-year business administration student from Charlottetown, scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Dalhousie on Friday and tallied again in a 1-0 win over Saint Marys on Sunday. Last weekend at UFC Fight Night 32 my #TeamLynch got the best of #TeamJC by a score of 9-6. The Cougars have since ripped off eight consecutive victories -- their longest streak since 1930 and the second-longest streak in the nation behind Alabama (22).Two years ago, Colorado and Washington State finished last in their respective divisions. Now, this game -- kicking off at 3:30 p.m. ET from Boulder, Colo. (Fox TV) -- is the biggest in the Pac-12.Isnt that great, said Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre. It is exciting for both teams. It is exciting for Washington State and Mike Leach and it is exciting for the University of Colorado and our staff. I am so excited for our fans. This is a special time in Colorado football.Colorado is one game up in the loss column on USC and Utah, the only other teams that can win the South. The Buffaloes likely have to win their final two games against ranked opponents to take the title and advance to the conference championship game. The Buffs finish the regular season at home against No. 11 Utah.Washington States division-tile hopes will likely come down to next weeks Apple Cup game against seventh-ranked Washington, which is one game back of the Cougars. WSU will have to navigate its tough final two regular-season games without senior wide receiver River Cracraft. His college career is over after he tore his left ACL in last weeks 56-21 win over California. He and fellow senior Gabe Marks are the only duo in Pac-12 history to each have 200 career catches at the same time.Hes a great player, coach Mike Leach said of Cracraft. He contributed early in his career, which I thought was impressive.Washington State junior quarterback Luke Falk is second nationally with 361.0 passing yards per game, directiing Leachs Air Raid attack.dddddddddddd. Falk last week set a school record with his 23rd career 300-yard game.Marks set the Pac-12 career receptions record last week; he has 295.Colorado counters with the best pass defense in the Pac-12, allowing 176.9 yards per game through the air. Opponents are completing just 50.9 percent of their passes, the best mark in the conference. But this WSU team also has balance, able to run the ball when the opportunity presents itself. Behind Gerard Wicks (career-high 128 yards) and James Williams (80 yards), the Cougars ran for 254 yards on 31 carries last week against Cal, their highest total in Leachs five seasons as head coach. It helps a lot, Marks said of the run game.I dont like to admit it sometimes, because the run game affects my life. But it has affected my life in a good way now. Back in the day, wed just run it and nothing would get done, and it was like dont run it. Just throw me the ball. ...Balance is good. Weve got some good balance right now.Colorado is solid and balanced, too.Senior Sefo Liufau, who set a school record last week with his 36th career start at quarterback, rarely makes a killer mistake. He recently had a streak of 152 passes without an interception. The Buffs can run the ball (204.7 yards per game) behind tailback Phillip Lindsay. They can stop the run (131.5 yards per game). They have forced a turnover in a national-best 23 consecutive games and are tied for 18th in turnover margin at 0.7 per game.Bottom line: They Buffs dont beat themselves. Their only losses this season came at Michigan (they were leading when Liufau left with an injury) and at USC.And, so, Saturday will mark the biggest home game of Colorados tenure in the Pac-12.Giving people something to believe in has always been a part of this season, wide receiver Shay Fields said on the teams website. Folsom the last couple of years hasnt been that packed. But since we won those first three, the fans have been outstanding. Theyve gotten the feeling that CU is back and thats exciting. ' ' '
