MINNEAPOLIS -- Brandon Roy gave it everything he had to try to resurrect a playing career derailed by chronic knee problems. He had platelet-rich plasma therapy on his knees last summer to get himself in position to sign a deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He worked hard in training camp to get his body in shape for the NBA after missing the previous year when he retired from Portland. And when the knee issues came up again early in the season, Roy had one more arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in a last-ditch effort to get on the court one last time. In the end, his knees wouldnt co-operate. And now his career may have come to a painful close once and for all. The Timberwolves waived Roy on Friday, which could mark the end of an All-Star career that was shortened by knee problems. "We wish Brandon and his family all the best in the future," new Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said in a statement issued by the team. Roy retired before last season when he couldnt alleviate the bone-on-bone pain in his knees that stopped the three-time All-Star from being the smooth, playmaking shooting guard that made him a franchise cornerstone in six seasons with the Blazers. But after getting some time to rest and trying the same advanced procedure that Kobe Bryant and others have used in the past, Roy felt good enough to try a comeback. He signed a two-year deal worth more than $10 million to join the Timberwolves, who were desperately in need of a big, shot-making shooting guard to play alongside Ricky Rubio in the backcourt. After a promising training camp, the knee issues quickly returned. Roy first was hurt again in a collision in a preseason game with the Indiana Pacers. He played five games at the start of the regular season, but that was all he could manage. He had arthroscopic surgery in December and tried several other methods of rehabilitation and therapy as the season progressed. Each time he thought he was getting close to returning, the pain would return. The 28-year-old Roy averaged 5.8 points and 4.6 assists in his five games with the Wolves. The second season of his deal was not guaranteed, making Roys release inevitable. The Wolves will get roughly $5.3 million in salary cap room by making the move, which will help Saunders pursue other alternatives for shooting guard this summer, which remains the teams biggest need. Free agents like O.J. Mayo or Kevin Martin, who played for coach Rick Adelman in Houston, could be possibilities, and the Wolves will also consider trading for a veteran and using their two first-round draft picks to improve its shooting from the perimeter. The Wolves will be looking to add size to the position after using Luke Ridnour, J.J. Barea and Alexey Shved, all on the smaller side, at shooting guard for most of the season. What are the best fake yeezys under $100 . Jeff Green scored 13 points and Kris Humphries 12 for the Celtics, who nearly blew an 18-point, second-half lead. Sullingers 20-20 was the first by a Celtics player since Kevin Garnetts first game in Boston in 2007. Garnett was dealt -- along with Paul Pierce -- to Brooklyn during the off-season. Meanwhile, there were huge victories for Sunderland and West Ham over fellow relegation rivals, leaving the battle to avoid the drop up for grabs with the bottom 11 teams separated by just six points. Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres scored second-half goals to seal a fourth straight victory for Chelsea, which climbed above Arsenal and Manchester City in the standings ahead of their games on Monday and Sunday respectively. Real Yeezy Boost Cheap . Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. Surely Ortons name isnt the first that comes to mind for fans wanting a change after years of damaging interceptions, fumbles or, most infamously, the field goal flub when Romo dropped the snap on a kick that could have won his first playoff game in 2006. That plan didnt go so well early.DENVER -- Kansas State found strength in numbers.D.J. Johnson had 19 points to lead six Wildcats scoring in double figures, and Kansas State pulled away in the second half to beat Colorado State 89-70 Saturday.Barry Brown had 14 points and Xavier Sneed added 12 for Kansas State (10-1), which won its fifth in a row since its loss to Maryland on Nov. 26.Johnson, who fouled out with just under two minutes remaining, also had 10 rebounds for his third career double-double.You get six guys in double figures, assists to turnovers of 17 to 9, and our rebounding was a huge thing, said Kansas State coach Bruce Weber. We got some timely offensive rebounds and a great start to the second half that broke their spirits.Prentiss Nixon had 30 points to lead Colorado State (8-3).Up by seven at the break, Kansas State stretched its lead 58-41 with a 14-4 run to open the second half. The surge featured two 3-pointers by Kamau Stokes and Johnson rim-rattling, one-handed dunk off an offensive rebound.By the time Johnson converted a 3-point play with 9:33 left, the Wildcats were up by 20 points, and the Rams could make little headway the rest of the way.I feel we have not peaked, but I feel we are in a good place, Brown said. We got a lot of guys involved. A lot of guys in double figures. The bench really picked us up and gave us a lot of energy in the first half and we carried it over to the second half.Nixon said a lackluster defensive effort was at thhe center of the Rams double-digit loss.ddddddddddddWe werent guarding anybody, Nixon said. They were getting open looks. We played terribly.Kansas State led 44-37 at halftime, using a 9-0 run to surge in front after Nixons 3-pointer had pulled the Rams to within a point.Brown capped the burst by converting a 3-point play.BIG PICTUREKansas State: A Wildcats strength this season has been their balanced scoring and it was once again on display in their latest victory. The game marked the eighth time this season that at least four Wildcats had scored in double figures.Colorado State: Nixon led all scorers with his 30-point game but it wasnt enough to keep up against the diversified offensive display by the Wildcats. The Rams were hurt by turnovers (14) and defensive breakdowns that saw Colorado State allow a season high in points.ONGOING UPSIDETheir strong start notwithstanding, Johnson said he continues to see an upside for the Wildcats. I think we played well as we have, he said. I thought our defense lagged a little bit in the first half. There is always room for improvement.UP NEXTKansas State: Rounds out its non-conference schedule by hosting Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night.Colorado State: Finishes a five-game home stand by returning to Moby Arena on the Fort Collins campus and hosting Loyola Marymount.
