SEATTLE - Even with a stellar seven inning start from Jordan Lyles, the Houston Astros were staring at the possibility of a winless road trip and seven-game losing streak as they headed to the plate in the ninth inning. An unearned run allowed in the eighth inning put the Seattle Mariners ahead 1-0 and seemingly ended the Astros hopes of a victory. They entered the game winless in 38 chances when trailing after eight innings and hadnt been able to score a single run in their last 17 innings against the Mariners. But the Astros provided a first for the 2013 season as they rallied for six runs off the Mariners bullpen to steal the victory away from Seattle and snap their six-game losing streak Wednesday night. "Its never too late when youre able to put together a six-run inning, especially after the woes weve had the last two games," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "It was definitely good to see the guys break out and put together some good at-bats in the ninth inning." Trailing 1-0, Jason Castro and J.D. Martinez led off with a pair of singles and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Carlos Corporan. After an intentional walk of Carlos Pena, Chris Carter doubled off the wall in left field to score a pair and give the Astros their first lead of the game. Another intentional walk loaded the bases again and brought the hook for Mariners closer Tom Wilhelmsen (0-2). It was Wilhelmsens fourth blown save in his last nine tries. Brandon Barnes drove in another run when his drive to left field glanced off the glove of Jason Bay and gave the Astros a 3-1 lead. Marwin Gonzalez drove in two more on a single to centre off Yoervis Medina and Charlie Furbush walked in another. "We score six in the ninth — we havent had the offence lately but it just shows we can do it in a big situation like that," Carter said. "Its good for the team." Paul Clemens (4-2) earned the victory for Houston. Lyles posted his best start of the season in holding the Mariners scoreless through seven innings. He allowed just three hits, two walks and struck out a career-high 10 to keep the game level into the eighth inning. "Jordan was outstanding again tonight," Porter said. "...Even the times in which he got into trouble, you can see the look in his eyes and the patience and the poise of Im going to make quality pitches to get out of this. I thought the big strikeouts with the bases loaded was huge." Lyles previous career-high for strikeouts had been eight coming into Wednesday nights game. Lyles struck out nine Mariners through the first four innings alone and retired the final 11 batters he faced. "Curveball was pretty good tonight," Lyles said. "We kept going to it — kept burying it in the dirt and guys are swinging over it." The Mariners had missed out on an opportunity to take the lead in the fourth inning off Lyles. Nick Franklin hit a one-out double off the wall in right field. Mike Zunino singled sharply to centre field for the first hit of his major league career but Franklin was held up at third base. A walk loaded the bases but Brendan Ryan and Alex Liddi both struck out as Lyles worked out of the jam. Mariners starter Jeremy Bonderman also pitched well. Bonderman allowed just three hits in eight innings. He walked two and struck out five before Wilhelmsen gave up the lead in the ninth. Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Wilhelmsen was missing up in the strike zone and the Astros were able to take advantage. "The ninth inning is a different animal. You saw the next two guys struggled too," Wedge said. "Weve got to get Tom driving the ball downstairs — missing down. When he does miss well work on it." Endy Chavez singled for Seattle to lead off the eighth inning. Gonzalez picked up an error when he dropped the throw from Hector Ambriz on a bunt from Jason Bay that would have been in time to beat Chavez at second base. After a pop out from Kyle Seager and strikeout by Raul Ibanez, Seager lined a single to right to drive in Chavez and give the Mariners their only run. Notes: Mariners C Mike Zunino made his major league debut just over a year removed from being selected by Seattle in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Zunino is the third catcher for Seattle to make their major league debut in the last 20 days joining Jesus Sucre and Brandon Bantz. ... STANFORD, Calif. -- New coach Jerod Haase will have plenty of time to bond with his new Stanford team if he hasnt done so fully already while working in recent months to develop a new culture on campus. The Cardinal are headed to China, where they will open the season against Harvard in Shanghai on Nov. 11.This is the second straight year a Pac-12 team has opened the season in China. Its pretty crazy. Ive never been to China. Its pretty amazing where basketball can take you, Stanford senior guard Marcus Allen said. Playing Harvard, playing one game. Anxious to get there and Im ready to play.Washington beat Texas in the first regular-season basketball game played in China. So far, Haase has focused much attention on teaching fundamentals. Its been a whirlwind of close to six months for me and the staff but its been a ton of fun, Haase said. I feel like every day we learn something new about the culture of Stanford, processes around Stanford and the people around Stanford. Every day we leave here a little more impressed with the place. Here are some things to watch for as Stanford begins a new era under Haase :IMPROVED HEALTH: Junior starting forward Reid Travis missed the final 22 games last season with an injured left leg, a blow to the Cardinals starting lineup. Guard Robert Cartwright, a projected starter last fall, was sidelined all of last season with a compound fracture in his right arm sustained in early November. Now, Travis will start fresh after scoring 12.8 points and grabbing 7.1 rebounds before his injury last season. He also was shooting a team-best 55.7 percent from the field. At this point the team is very healthy, Haase said.NAVY SEALS TRAINING: When his players had returned from summer and before classes began, Haase took his team to Lake Tahoe for a couple of days back in September to go through Navy Seals-type training. It involves team bonding, leadership skills and fitness combined into one preseason regimen. It was a great time but it was very tough, Marcus Allen said. It did challenge your willpower, both mentally and physically. These grueling classes have gone mainstream for coollege teams in recent seasons, with Stanford doing a similar camp three years ago.dddddddddddd.It was something I think our guys got a lot of value out of, Haase said. Its something that tries to put them in tough situations but more importantly at the end of the day try to put them in situations where theyre learning lessons about teamwork and leadership.BROTHERLY LOVE: Twins Marcus and Malcolm Allen will cherish their final season together, with Marcus a senior and Malcolm a junior after he sat out his sophomore season on a medical redshirt with a broken wrist.Malcolm is the jokester, according to his brother. Im more laid back. Im not as out there as Malcolm. As far as who wins 1-on-1, Marcus says it depends on the day and they tend to take turns beating each other.SCORING THREATS: Haase hasnt gone through all the game film from last season, rather just watching small clips as needed. He has a decent idea about his team, and much of the work so far has been getting back to the basics of strong fundamentals. He wants to have an up-tempo offense that shares the ball, moves it and looks for the best shot. One of our biggest question marks is our ability to shoot the basketball. We do have a lot of capable shooters. We need to put them into positions and really emphasize quality shots, Haase said. Were just trying to take baby steps every day but really build a strong, strong foundation.STANFORD SUPPORT SYSTEM: Haase knew Stanford was a special place, but he has been thrilled with the support of other coaches on campus -- including Hall of Fame womens coach Tara VanDerveer and football coach David Shaw.Tara is a rock star. Her commitment to our program is just great, Haase said. Coach Shaw has been great. He will certainly lean on them both. Haase knows it will take time for the Cardinal to become a regular contender again. Stanford advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2014 NCAA Tournament under former coach Johnny Dawkins and NIT championships after the 2012 and `15 seasons. ' ' '
