DURHAM, N.C. -- Grayson Allen keeps putting up huge numbers for No. 5 Duke. Imagine how much more impressive they might be if he were healthy enough to practice.Allen scored 24 points, Luke Kennard added 20 and the Blue Devils beat Michigan State 78-69 on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.Allen has been dealing with lingering foot injuries for the past two weeks, with coach Mike Krzyzewski saying he hurt his toe before the Penn State game on Nov. 19 and limped through the Rhode Island game the next day. He checked out of the Appalachian State game early three days ago when he reinjured the toe.Grayson does not practice one second, Krzyzewski said. So when hes out on that court, its a gutty performance. ... That kid has played unbelievably, and hes limping.Amile Jefferson had 17 points and 13 rebounds while freshman Frank Jackson finished with 11 points and keyed a timely 11-0 run for the Blue Devils (7-1), who won their fourth straight despite shooting just 27 percent from 3-point range.Eron Harris scored 14 points for Michigan State (4-4). Playing their first game as an unranked team since March 2015, the Spartans had 18 turnovers -- Too much AAU ball, not enough college ball, coach Tom Izzo said. Star freshman Miles Bridges was held to 11 points -- six fewer than his team-leading average -- on 4-of-13 shooting.I didnt think Miles played as hard as hes been playing, Izzo said. Hed been playing hard, and just got caught standing around.Neither team led by more than four before the Blue Devils broke a 48-all tie by reeling off 11 straight points, a run that coincided with a series of Spartan slaps to the floor -- one of Dukes trademark moves.Seconds after Bridges gave the floor a firm slap, Jackson blew past the Michigan State guards for a layup that gave Duke its largest lead to that point, 55-48, with just under 13 minutes left.I guess it didnt work for them, Jackson said. I just tried to stay aggressive.BIG PICTUREMichigan State: Izzo has admitted he might have overscheduled these Spartans, whose four losses have all come to teams ranked 16th or better in the current AP Top 25, with the last two coming against top-10 teams. Theyve only played twice so far at the Breslin Center, but at least they wont have to leave East Lansing again until Dec. 27.Weve been through the gauntlet, no question about it, but we competed almost to the end, Izzo said. Im going to build on this.Duke: Allen was just 7 of 21 shooting in 37 minutes, and the Blue Devils needed major minutes from him because they went just six deep -- the five starters, plus Chase Jeter. Injured freshman forwards Harry Giles, Marques Bolden and Jayson Tatum once again took part in pregame warmups with varying stages of intensity. Krzyzewski says Tatum had a good workout, Giles just needs some contact and Bolden is moving along.Every teams season is a little bit different, Krzyzewski said. We just have to run our race the way were running it, and eventually, hopefully, well get all those guys.POLL IMPLICATIONSThis is the kind of victory that will keep the Blue Devils in the top five, and in all likelihood, keep them near the top of the RPI.STAT LINEKrzyzewski said Matt Jones had a spectacular 2-point performance tonight. The Duke senior was just 1 of 7 from the field and missed all six of his 3-pointers to finish with two points -- but keyed the defensive effort that locked down Bridges. When youre all about winning, youre really important, and Matt Jones is only about winning.UP NEXTMichigan State: The Spartans get some relief from their brutal early season schedule and begin a run of five manageable home games Saturday when they play host to Oral Roberts.Duke: The Blue Devils wrap up their four-game homestand Saturday with a visit from Maine before returning to New York to face No. 24 Florida on Dec. 6.---Follow Joedy McCreary at http://twitter.com/joedyap.---More AP college basketball: www.collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25. Jim Sundberg Jersey . After taking two big hits this week -- losing at home and dropping back-to-back games for the first time all season -- Indiana struck back by playing its most complete game of the year. Josh Staumont Jersey . Calgary scored on the first shift, and Michael Cammalleri scored twice as the Flames cruised to a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday. https://www.cheaproyals.com/337a-alcides-escobar-jersey-royals.html . The veteran safety was a starter for the Bengals from 2008-2012. He totaled 41 tackles and three interceptions while starting all but four of the 13 games he played last season. Arnaldo Hernandez Jersey . This should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season. Royals Jerseys 2020 . The team said Saturday that Lopez was hurt during its 121-120 overtime loss at Philadelphia on Friday. The Nets said they would issue another update next week after consultation with their doctors. Dan Hughes cued up the video of a recent San Antonio Stars game. In particular, one in-bounds play that resulted in a basket for Monique Currie. The thing he noticed first was the Jayne Appel-Marinelli screen that got Currie free to knock down the shot.Jayne does those things for us, Hughes said.Shes done them a lot for seven years -- and thats why her body hurts. Pretty much all the time.I feel like a Band-Aid, Appel-Marinelli said. Every game, I put it on so I can play, and at the end of the game, I rip it off.My job has been extremely physical. I set screens for Becky Hammon for five years and for Kayla McBride after that. And I have a lot of tough defensive matchups. I may not get all the rebounds. But I have to keep somebody like Nneka [Ogwumike] from getting them.During the Olympic break, Appel-Marinelli went home to New York, to new husband Chris Marinelli. They got married in April, dating since they were at Stanford, where Marinelli played for the Cardinal football team. She had time to think. And rest. And imagine what the rest of her life might look like.Appel-Marinelli returned to San Antonio, gave it a couple of games and went into Hughes office and told her coach that this will be her last WNBA season. It just feels right, and I feel good about it, Appel-Marinelli said. This is the end of a playing career, but I dont feel like Im done with basketball.Hughes said he knew it when she walked in the door.I was at her wedding. I knew she was entering a different stage of her life, Hughes said. The timing is right for her in a lot of ways.Appel-Marinelli, who will move back to New York, hopes to stay involved with the WNBA players association. She has been the Stars player rep for five years, the WNBPAs secretary/treasurer for three. She did an offseason internship two years ago at St. Francis College in Brooklyn in the athletic department and said she is interested in the business side of athletics. And Appel-Marinelli will continue her work as a mental health advocate, a cause close to her heart as she has a family member diagnosed with schizophrenia.Hughes said that Appel-Marinelli taught her teammates an important lesson. She showed that you can use basketball as a vehicle to step into a community aand make it better, Hughes said.ddddddddddddOn the floor, Appel-Marinellis pro career wasnt perhaps the highlight reel that many expected after a stellar career at Stanford, where she played in three Final Fours and two national championship games for Tara VanDerveer.VanDerveer regards Appel-Marinelli as one of the best post players shes ever coached, a pinpoint passer out of the paint with great hands and a team-first ethic. But Appel-Marinelli wasnt the same dominant post presence in the WNBA that she was in college. The player who put up 46 points against Iowa State in an Elite Eight game in 2009 never scored more than 17 points in a WNBA game in seven years.I never really knew what to expect from being a professional athlete, Appel-Marinelli said. I came into the draft with a broken foot and an injured ankle, and I missed my first training camp and felt like I spent my whole rookie year catching up.Appel-Marinelli played her entire WNBA career in San Antonio, starting 150 games (averaging 4.1 points and 6.1 rebounds) and settling into a role with the Stars that Hughes said was invaluable to the franchise. She is a strong rebounder, an imposing presence under the glass who has made the most of the things she does well. She came in here, battled through injuries and worked her way into a specific role, Hughes said. Jayne could rebound, she understands the game, she can pass the ball. She landed in a place that really appreciated what she could do. She was not going to get headlines for scoring. But she has always had the love of her team for all the little things she does to make them better.Appel-Marinelli said she will most miss her relationship with her teammates as she retires.Ive been lucky to get to go to work every day and play basketball with some of my best friends, she said. I have made lifelong friendships. But for the first time in her life, starting in a couple of weeks, she will have control of her own schedule. For the first time since high school, maybe even before that, Appel-Marinelli said. Its time to see what else is out there, what comes next after basketball. ' ' '
