PDTShareTweetShareShare2019 NFL Draft: Immediate reactions, grades of Raiders selection of safety Johnathan Abram with the 27th overall pickVasha Hunt-USA TODAY SportsAfter adding Clelin Ferrell and Josh Jacobs, the Raiders selected Mississippi State safety Johnathan Abram with the 27th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. How does the staff at Silver & Black Pride view the selection? Tyler GreenWhile Oakland signed Lamarcus Joyner in free agency, he is projected to primarily lineup in the nickel leaving Paul Guenther with just Karl Joseph and Erik Harris as safeties. The addition of Johnathan Abram significantly improves the depth of the secondary, as he can immediately step in as a box safety. Abram has solid range, but his best attribute is his physicality as he can set the tone of a defense with his style of play. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah pegged Abram as his 23rd overall player in this draft, so the value is solid for Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden. Grade: B+BD WilliamsFirst what you love when watching Abram is the urgent speed he plays with on the field. Easily the fiercest hitter at the safety position in this class, Abram is tough and incredibly physical. That being said he has shown a concerning lack of discipline when in coverage and gives up long passes with regularity because he’s so focused on coming up and making a play against the run. He played mostly in the box as an extra linebacker at Mississippi State and has a long way to go before he can be an every down NFL safety. Basically a younger Karl Joseph.Grade: CMarcus KrauseJohnathan Abram is not someone I anticipated the Raiders selecting, he does not help the Raiders pass defense nearly enough to warrant selecting him at 27. If they wanted a safety then Nasir Adderley is the one I would have preferred, simply because his ball skills are so much better. The area that Abram does excel at is his tackling and run defense, he is a physical safety who definitely knows how to hit. Hopefully this pick works out better than I picture though https://www.raiderslockerroom.com/authentic-antonio-brown-jersey , because the last thing the Raiders should have went after was another player who isn’t very good at playing the ball in the air for their secondary.Grade: CThomas WheatonJohnathan Abram seems to me like Karl Joseph 2.0, so why would the Raiders take him when Joseph is still on the roster? Abram is a box safety that is a sure tackler, but his coverage leaves a bit to be desired. The Raiders needed someone to cover tight ends. Can Abram do that? If he shows that he can, we will look back on this pick and Madden put out their 2020 video game rookie ratings and the disrespect for Clelin Ferrell is apparent." />Skip to main contentclockmenumore-arrownoyesSilver And Black Pride homepageHorizontal - WhiteSilver And Black Pridean Oakland Raiders communityFollow Silver And Black Pride online:Follow Silver And Black Pride on TwitterFollow Silver And Black Pride on FacebookLog in or sign upLog InSign UpSite searchSearchSearchSilver And Black Pride main menuFanpostsFanshotsRaidersOddsAboutMastheadCommunity GuidelinesStubHubMoreAll 321 blogs on Horizontal - WhiteFanposts Fanshots Raiders StoriesScheduleRosterStatsYahoo Raiders NewsYahoo Raiders Team PageYahoo Raiders ReportYahoo Raiders Depth ChartYahoo Raiders TransactionsYahoo Raiders PhotosOdds About Masthead Community Guidelines StubHub ✕Clelin Ferrell gets disrespected as Raiders rookies get their 2020 Madden ratingsNew,39commentsMadden put out their 2020 video game rookie ratings and the disrespect for Clelin Ferrell is apparent.PDTAdd Madden 2020 to the list of those who clearly don’t see Clelin Ferrell as worthy of the 4th overall pick. The iconic video game put out their rookie ratings today. Ferrell’s rating is a 74 which is tied for 13th among rookies. And well below the rookie high of 80 given to Quinnen Williams That’s also fourth among edge rushers alone behind Nick Bosa (78), Josh Allen (77), and Brian Burns (75). You could throw Ed Oliver in there as well. He scored a 79.Seven rookies received a 74 Madden rating including fellow first round rookie, Josh Jacobs who was selected at 24 overall. To find Johnathan Abram, who the team selected at 27 overall, you have to go much farther down and out of the 70s entirely. He received a rating of 69. That’s tied with fellow Raiders rookies Treyvon Mullen (40 overall) and Foster Moreau (4th round).Fifth round pick Hunter Renfrow received a 70. Go figure that. Here are all the Raiders rookie Madden ratings1a. Clelin Ferrell - 741b. Josh Jacobs - 741c. Johnathan Abram - 692. Trayvon Mullen - 694a. Maxx Crosby - 674b. Isaiah Johnson - 674c.
