I had finished B.Sc Mathematics and my father pushed me to do engineering. When I was doing my engineering in Coimbatore, I came to Chennai every weekend to play first-division cricket. I was scoring a lot of runs, but there was no opening for me in the team.I had to wait quite a bit because there were others who made their debuts. But they never quite latched on to the opportunity and I got my go. At one point, I thought I might never make it. But, I was so hell bent on wanting to play cricket that I didnt feel like going to the USA to pursue my MS degree. I asked my dad to give me one years time and within that I would play in the Ranji Trophy. When that happened, he asked me What now?; I said, Give me one more year, I will play for India. And I did play for India.During the train journey to Hyderabad for my Ranji Trophy debut, whenever I turned around I would see someone or the other looking at me. My team-mates knew my father was a leading lawyer and I didnt come from a background where the Ranji Trophy meant a lot to me. They knew I used to drive my fathers Mercedes Benz to matches. Not that I was pampered, but people looked at it and thought: Oh god, this guy has got a lot of money. I just tried to read something on the train and make sure my nerves were settling down.There were a few good things about making my debut at the Secunderabad Gymkhana. It has always been a good pitch to bat on and was lucky for me after that match as well. But, captain Abdul Jabbar lost the toss and we saw Abdul Azeem score a triple hundred. We then saw Khalid Abdul Qayyum and Vijay Mohanraj also get a hundred. I remember one fast bowler, Immanuel Rajkumar, was also making his debut; he must have wished he hadnt been there.Those days few people had the Morrant pads, and Azeem was one of them. He played forward to a delivery from Rajkumar, and the ball ricocheted off the pads and went back to Rajkumar quite sharply. Rajkumar held it with one hand and appealed. It was so funny and we made fun of him. That kind of desperation was because Hyderabads score at that time was 500 for 3 or something. When my turn to bat came, I decided to hang on and play out 55 overs or so [on the second day]. I remember one moment when V Sivaramakrishnan was batting in the 90s, and he flicked the ball to mid-wicket to Azeem, who was their best fielder, and called for a run. He was really angry when I turned it down, but there was no run there. The next ball, Arshad Ayub went diagonally round the stumps and darted one of his faster ones - it must have been about 135 kph (laughs). He didnt offer a shot and the stump went flying. Sivaramakrishnan didnt say anything to me, and everybody in the team knew he was a fussy runner so nobody said anything. It was just his nerves in the 90s and he was looking get off strike. I dont remember how I got out, but its a surprise I got out to Bobjee (Narasimha Rao); it must have been a terrible delivery (laughs). I was dismissed for 81.I had never been to Hyderabad before that trip. I had read so much about the Charminar and seen photographs of it, so I desperately wanted to see it. But, once there, I felt totally disappointed; I could barely breath and move around. But, Hyderabad has been lucky in a lot of ways. I got a call to play for India in the one-dayers against New Zealand after the selectors saw me at the Fateh Maidan [Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium].When I got back to Chepauk, there was this manager called Santhanam in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. When I met him, he said: its good you got out for 81. I was so upset because a hundred on debut would have been special, and asked him why he said that. He said batsmen who scored a hundred on debut for Tamil Nadu never played more than five or six matches. Now he believes the group of young players hes guiding will make some history of their own. Triano led the Canadian team that won the 1983 World University Games in Edmonton, shocking a mighty American squad that included Charles Barkley and Karl Malone in the semifinals before toppling Yugoslavia in the gold-medal game. Three decades later, the 54-year-old is on the bench as Canadas mens head coach at the 27th Universiade in Kazan, Russia. "Thirty years ago, 15 of these Games ago," Triano said, recalling Canadas brilliant performance in 1983. "Wow 30 years, dont remind me. . ." he added, laughing. The Canadians are 2-0 at these Games and tied with the United States and Australia atop Pool C, after opening with an 84-69 victory over Sweden and then clobbering the United Arab Emirates 137-43. Canada is fielding a development team that includes 6-9 forward Kyle Wiltjer who helped the Kentucky Wildcats capture the NCAA title in his freshman year in 2012, Kevin Pangos, a 6-1 guard at Gonzaga, and brothers Philip and Thomas Scrubb, whove helped Carleton win the Canadian university title in all three of their seasons in Ottawa. "Weve got so many good young players in our country, and they want to be here, they want to be competing for Canada, and thats what makes this fun," Triano said. "They elected to not go to opening ceremonies, for example, because we had a game the next day. Theyre very driven and theyre very dedicated to playing for their country and doing well. "This is the type of thing we want, we want our young players to feel that way and we want them to grow in the program with those same beliefs." Triano, whos in his second stint as Canadas head coach -- his first was 1998 to 2005 -- said its key he got involved with the young players from the outset. "I think its important with the progression that were trying to make with them and their movement up to the national team," Triano said after practice in Kazan ahead of Wednesdays game versus Australia. "I think its good for me to get a good idea of what they can do and where they might fit in with our program in the future, and its good for me to get back coaching at the international game again. They get to understand me, I get to understand them. "We think in the next four to six or eight years, Canada is going to be very prominent on the international basketball scene and a lot of these players are going to be part of that." The squad is perfect so far this summer, going 9-0 at a Four Nations tournament in China that included three victories over the U.S. The trip to China was the perfect chance for Triano, who was rehired as Canadas head coach last summer, to get to know the young players. "The conditions were not great in China, and it was great to kind of bond with them when we went through a tough time over there, and to be successful doing it I think really helped us a lot," he said.dddddddddddd Tough times included four-hour bus rides to and from games, sometimes with a flight tacked on. "And sometimes the food was difficult to eat in some of the smaller cities we were in, we werent sure what we were eating," Triano said. "It was just the hardships of going through the difficult things around the game, and trying to be focused on the game. It was a challenge, I was really pleased with how they adapted, how they accepted the challenge. "Those types of things help make you mentally tough, and thats part of international games." Canadas victory in 1983 was the teams only Universiade gold in basketball, although Triano and his team went on to win bronze two years later. In all, Canada has won one gold, four silver and four bronze in basketball. "I joke with the players, I played in four World University Games (1979, 81, 83 and 85) and theyre every two years, so I was a student for eight years," Triano said laughing. Triano was part of a senior squad coached by the late Jack Donohue that represented Canada back then. Now, Canadas development team will have played 17 international games by the time the Universiade ends -- all great experience for the countrys future stars. "We cant duplicate living in a village and the international games in tournaments like this," Triano said. "I think its great were here competing like we are, and Im happy to be back. . . its all good." The tournament will get significantly more difficult over the next three days as Canada battles Australia on Wednesday, the Czech Republic on Thursday, and the Americans on Friday. Only two teams from each pool advance to the quarter-finals. "One thing about these Games, they sometimes cater to the home team having an easier draw," Triano said. "Weve got our work cut out for us for the rest of this week. But thats why were doing this, we want the challenge, and we want to play the best teams in the world. Were going to have two of the best up against us in the next few days, so its a great challenge for the guys." The quarter-final and consolation round games are Sunday, with the medal games scheduled for next Tuesday. The Canadians won silver at the Games two years ago in Shenzhen, China. Triano will then gather the senior mens squad together in Toronto on Aug. 1 to begin camp ahead of the FIBA Americas tournament in the fall -- the qualifier for the 2014 world championships. A few of the development players will likely be invited to the senior camp, Triano said. One notable absence from that camp will be high school star Andrew Wiggins, whos attending the University of Kansas in the fall. "I think this year is the year were going to just him go to school and play for that one year," Triano said. "Hopefully hell be in the pool next year after he gets drafted." ' ' '
