Jay Triano experienced one of Canadas greatest basketball moments. Now he believes the group of young players hes guiding will make some history of their own. Triano led the Canadian team that won the 1983 World University Games in Edmonton, shocking a mighty American squad that included Charles Barkley and Karl Malone in the semifinals before toppling Yugoslavia in the gold-medal game. Three decades later, the 54-year-old is on the bench as Canadas mens head coach at the 27th Universiade in Kazan, Russia. "Thirty years ago, 15 of these Games ago," Triano said, recalling Canadas brilliant performance in 1983. "Wow 30 years, dont remind me. . ." he added, laughing. The Canadians are 2-0 at these Games and tied with the United States and Australia atop Pool C, after opening with an 84-69 victory over Sweden and then clobbering the United Arab Emirates 137-43. Canada is fielding a development team that includes 6-9 forward Kyle Wiltjer who helped the Kentucky Wildcats capture the NCAA title in his freshman year in 2012, Kevin Pangos, a 6-1 guard at Gonzaga, and brothers Philip and Thomas Scrubb, whove helped Carleton win the Canadian university title in all three of their seasons in Ottawa. "Weve got so many good young players in our country, and they want to be here, they want to be competing for Canada, and thats what makes this fun," Triano said. "They elected to not go to opening ceremonies, for example, because we had a game the next day. Theyre very driven and theyre very dedicated to playing for their country and doing well. "This is the type of thing we want, we want our young players to feel that way and we want them to grow in the program with those same beliefs." Triano, whos in his second stint as Canadas head coach -- his first was 1998 to 2005 -- said its key he got involved with the young players from the outset. "I think its important with the progression that were trying to make with them and their movement up to the national team," Triano said after practice in Kazan ahead of Wednesdays game versus Australia. "I think its good for me to get a good idea of what they can do and where they might fit in with our program in the future, and its good for me to get back coaching at the international game again. They get to understand me, I get to understand them. "We think in the next four to six or eight years, Canada is going to be very prominent on the international basketball scene and a lot of these players are going to be part of that." The squad is perfect so far this summer, going 9-0 at a Four Nations tournament in China that included three victories over the U.S. The trip to China was the perfect chance for Triano, who was rehired as Canadas head coach last summer, to get to know the young players. "The conditions were not great in China, and it was great to kind of bond with them when we went through a tough time over there, and to be successful doing it I think really helped us a lot," he said. Tough times included four-hour bus rides to and from games, sometimes with a flight tacked on. "And sometimes the food was difficult to eat in some of the smaller cities we were in, we werent sure what we were eating," Triano said. "It was just the hardships of going through the difficult things around the game, and trying to be focused on the game. It was a challenge, I was really pleased with how they adapted, how they accepted the challenge. "Those types of things help make you mentally tough, and thats part of international games." Canadas victory in 1983 was the teams only Universiade gold in basketball, although Triano and his team went on to win bronze two years later. In all, Canada has won one gold, four silver and four bronze in basketball. "I joke with the players, I played in four World University Games (1979, 81, 83 and 85) and theyre every two years, so I was a student for eight years," Triano said laughing. Triano was part of a senior squad coached by the late Jack Donohue that represented Canada back then. Now, Canadas development team will have played 17 international games by the time the Universiade ends -- all great experience for the countrys future stars. "We cant duplicate living in a village and the international games in tournaments like this," Triano said. "I think its great were here competing like we are, and Im happy to be back. . . its all good." The tournament will get significantly more difficult over the next three days as Canada battles Australia on Wednesday, the Czech Republic on Thursday, and the Americans on Friday. Only two teams from each pool advance to the quarter-finals. "One thing about these Games, they sometimes cater to the home team having an easier draw," Triano said. "Weve got our work cut out for us for the rest of this week. But thats why were doing this, we want the challenge, and we want to play the best teams in the world. Were going to have two of the best up against us in the next few days, so its a great challenge for the guys." The quarter-final and consolation round games are Sunday, with the medal games scheduled for next Tuesday. The Canadians won silver at the Games two years ago in Shenzhen, China. Triano will then gather the senior mens squad together in Toronto on Aug. 1 to begin camp ahead of the FIBA Americas tournament in the fall -- the qualifier for the 2014 world championships. A few of the development players will likely be invited to the senior camp, Triano said. One notable absence from that camp will be high school star Andrew Wiggins, whos attending the University of Kansas in the fall. "I think this year is the year were going to just him go to school and play for that one year," Triano said. "Hopefully hell be in the pool next year after he gets drafted."Zach Allen Cardinals Jersey .ca! Hi Kerry, Its another day and here we are looking at another dubious hit to the head. In this case Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky elbowed Saku Koivu in the head about a second after he dished off the puck to a teammate, knocking him unconscious. Larry Fitzgerald Cardinals Jersey . Burke is expected to miss two to three months after breaking a finger in the teams third preseason game. Tinsley, a 10-year veteran, spent the last two seasons in Utah, where the point guard averaged 3. http://www.nflcardinalsrookiestore.com/Cardinals-Kurt-Warner-Jersey/ . A forerunning sled crashed into the worker Thursday at the Sanki Sliding Center. The unidentified worker broke both legs and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Andy Isabella Youth Jersey . Uniteds eighth defeat of a wretched campaign means Liverpool, which currently occupies the fourth and final Champions League place, could go nine points clear of its fierce rival by beating West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. Charlie Adam scored both of Stokes goals at Britannia Stadium either side of Robin van Persies equalizer, with a miserable day for seventh-place United capped by first-half injuries to centre halves Jonny Evans and Phil Jones that forced them off. Chandler Jones Jersey . The judges scored it 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 for Jones (19-1). It was the champions closest call. Despite the loss, it was a remarkable show by the confident Swedish challenger, who had the best of the early rounds and then hung on in the fourth and fifth.MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens are riding high but their early season success will be put to the test against one of their toughest opponents to date.Winners of five straight after dispatching the New York Islanders 3-2 on Wednesday night, Montreal (6-0-1) returns home to host a rested Tampa Bay Lightning squad on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.Defenseman Shea Weber scored the game-winner on a late third period power play to go with an assist, and now leads the Canadiens with nine points. Three of those have been goals and two of those tallies have stood as the decisive markers. Its a good team effort, he said of their early season success. Everybodys doing the right things consistently throughout the lineup, up and down. The Canadiens have now won six of their first seven games for the third straight season, a feat realized only three previous times in franchise history. But while the team is enjoying another remarkable start, the players know how quickly it can evaporate after last seasons epic collapse.Weve always known we had a good group in here, Canadiens winger Brendan Gallagher said after the game. Its just about learning from last year and understanding that whatever it is--last year it was nine games, I think were seven games in now--it doesnt mean anything unless you can finish it off.So for us, just continue to build, not get too far ahead of ourselves. Day after day, just go about our business, try and take care of what we can control. The Atlantic Division rivals occupy the top two spots in the division, with Montreal holding a three-point edge over Tampa (5-1-0). The two clubs also sit in the upper echelons in NHL scoring, with thee Lightning averaging 3.dddddddddddd83 goals-per-game through six games to the Canadiens 3.71 through seven. But while both teams can put the puck in the net, its taken some time for them to do so. The Habs and Lightning have each scored just three times in the first period, and for Tampa, all three of their first period goals came in Tuesdays rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was something we talked about before was getting out to a good start, especially on the road, its always important, Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said following the game. It definitely set the tone for the game and put us up.After ceding the crease to Al Montoya for Wednesdays tilt, goaltender Carey Price will get the nod at home against Tampa. Hell face them for the first time since May 12, 2015, when the two teams squared off in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.Ben Bishop is expected to get the start for the Lightning after turning in one of his best efforts against Toronto. While he allowed three goals for a fourth start, he came up big when his team needed him as the Lightning were outshot 43-24.It was the best Ive felt for sure, Bishop told the Tampa Bay Times. Its been kind of a work in progress. The previous games we watched, I was doing everything right, staying with the process. And I kind of got some unfortunate bounces. The stats arent where youd like them. But the wins are there, and thats the important thing.Bishop is 10-3-3 lifetime against Montreal, with a 1.80 goals-against average and .932 save percentage in 17 games. ' ' '
