MANCHESTER, England -- Newly hired Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has continued the reshaping of his squad by signing attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal.United announced the signing Wednesday without disclosing the fee for the Armenia international, who scored 23 goals for Dortmund last season and was the German leagues player of the year.Mourinho, who has already signed striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and center back Eric Bailly this offseason, says the 27-year-old Mkhitaryan is a real team player with great skill, vision and also has a good eye for goal.Mkhitaryan said signing for United honors my fathers memory, and the inspiration and drive he gave to me when I was young. He likely will be one of the three attacking midfielders in Uniteds lineup this season. LONG POND, Pa. -- Jeff Gordon wouldnt speculate on whether he would continue driving the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 car after this week at Pocono Raceway, but he said he feels good enough to continue racing if needed.Gordon views his role as a substitute driver as a temporary one, but just how temporary is still to be determined. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is missing his third consecutive race battling balance and nausea likely form concussions, and the four-time Cup champion is in his second week coming out of retirement as a substitute.I will be here as long as they need me, Gordon said Friday after practice at Pocono Raceway. I say that very loosely. ... Will it be more? I dont know, but Im just thankful that the team believes in me and that gives me confidence in myself.Turning 45 next week, Gordon battled back issues throughout the latter stages of his career, which had appeared to end after the 2015 season with 93 wins in 797 starts. He said he certainly felt it Monday and Tuesday after a 13th-place finish at Indianapolis.I fought threw it the last few years, said Gordon, an equity owner in Hendrick who feels the time in the car can help him in his new advisory role. I can fight through it longer if I have to. I prefer not to. I am looking at this as a very temporary thing. ... I wish Dale a speedy recovery. Id like him to be back in the car.But at the same time if hes not, I feel like each time Im in the car Ill be more confident and comfortable to get better results.Gordon would make his 800th start next week -- if he races -- at Watkins Glen. The series then has a week off before races Bristol, Michigan, Darlington and Richmond close out the regular season before the 10-week Chase, and Gordon refused to speculate on whether the schedule will impact the decision on Earnhardts return.Thats a question for Dale and a podcast, Gordon said.On The Dale Jr. Download podcast on his internet radio network, Earnhardt said Monday that he would see doctors soon and have another update this Monday.ddddddddddddThere are certain things that you can race through, but one of the things that you cannot race through is concussion-like symptoms, Earnhardt said. The balance deal is a critical part of being able to drive a race car. This process is going to take a little bit longer. ... Im not going to go against that [doctors] advice no matter what. I cant play around at this age. And with my history, I definitely dont need to get cute.Earnhardts team is still eligible for the owners title through points (and any future wins) earned by substitute drivers. Gordon said that could play a role on who gets behind the wheel if Earnhardt cant return. He said there is no pressure from HMS on Earnhardt to return before he feels comfortable returning.I wouldnt be here in Pocono if I wasnt committed to being there for Hendrick and this team in any way that would need me, Gordon said. There is a balance in trying to make this transition. ... Theres the side of who is the best person to be in the car to get the most points and then there is the sponsorship side of it as well.So far, from what Rick [Hendrick] is telling me, that seems to be me.Gordon has talked with Earnhardt, who has done his best to stay as engaged as possible. He likes to FaceTime, Gordon said. It seems like he is always on the treadmill every time I see him or talk to him. But hes just real interested in what were up to and hows it going and things were working on.Earnhardt, on the podcast Monday, said he misses the interaction with his team.I miss the people more than the driving, to be honest with you, Earnhardt said. The friendships and the relationships that you have at the race track are more valuable, to me, than anything. ' ' '
DALLAS -- Houston followed its first loss of the season to Navy with a narrow victory against Tulsa, a three-touchdown underdog that fell inches short of tying the score in the final seconds on the road.If the 11th-ranked Cougars want to regain the dominance that carried them into the top 10, coach Tom Herman figures they have to recognize that they will get the opponents best effort. And that includes SMU on Saturday night. We are learning to be the overdog instead of the underdog, Herman said. It is interesting, you are drawing on different senses to motivate yourself. Its all pride when you are the underdog that is disrespected. There is the pride of the, `Hey, Im going to prove all of you wrong. Now its the pride of, `Hey, we have to prove everybody right. The realistic playoff chances for Houston (6-1, 3-1 American) ended with the loss to Navy. If quarterback Greg Ward Jr. and the Cougars want to rekindle those hopes, theyll need some convincing victories leading into a late-season nonconference showdown with Louisville. And SMU (2-4, 0-2) is another three-touchdown underdog. There is a little rivalry being that we are the only two teams in our conference in the state of Texas, Herman said. Theyre going to give us their best shot, and their best shot is good enough to beat us if were not hitting all our cylinders.Things to consider in the resumption of a series that Houston leads 15-3-1 since the Mustangs returned from the so-called death penalty in 1989 and lost to the Cougars 95-21:FORGET ABOUT IT: Herman says he had zero interest in news this week that the Big 12 rejected Houston and 10 other schools for possible expansion. The anti-Big 12 reaction in the state was swift, including a rebuke from Gov. Greg Abbott . Im dead serious when I tell you it consumes zero amount of my time, energy, effort or thought at all, said Herman, whose name will be prominent in high-profile coaching searches this offseason.WORKING WARD: The senior standout has more than twice as many rushing attempts as any of the Houston running backs, leading to questions of whether he is being overused. He has 105 carries for 414 yards with six touchdowns. Ward is ninth nationally at 323 yards passing per game. He has 224 attempts and a 70 percent completion rate with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Ive had the conversation with the offensive staff about can we win with less read plays maybe, Herman said. But if we need to win the game, well use him.SPEAKING OF OVERWORKED: The Cougars still havent had a bye, and wont until after hosting Central Florida next week. The Louisville showdown comes a Thursday after playing Tulane the preceding Saturday. And SMU is coming off a bye. Were playing football for 12 1/2 weeks straight, so its going to take its toll on their bodies, Herman said.THE FADE ROUTE: SMU stayed close for a half as a double-digit underdog against high-scoring Texas rivals Baylor and TCU. The Mustangs were even with the Bears on the road at 6-6, and trailed the Horned Frogs 6-3 at home. But Baylor, now ranked ninth, outscored SMU 34-7 after halftime for a 40-13 win. TCU pulled away for a 33-3 win after a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second half.---College Football: http://collegefootball.ap.orgPierre Garcon Super Bowl Jersey . -- In a span of seven Washington Redskins offensive plays, Justin Tuck sacked Robert Griffin III four times. No. 13-seeded John Isner and No. 21 Philipp Kohlschreiber were among six players who dropped out of the tournament on Tuesday, joining No. 12 seed Tommy Haas and two other players who withdrew on Monday. Just a couple of weeks back, I wrote a column in which I asked six NFL coaches and personnel men to vote on the best wide receiver in football.?Julio Jones earned five of the six first-place votes, standing above the likes of Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham Jr. and A.J. Green. This column is a similar exercise, though the position in question is running back. I set out to find the best back in football with the help of insights from coaches and personnel men, but the path to an answer was a decidedly different one.Whereas Jones skill set is one that would be tailor made for any offense -- his rare combination of size, speed, agility and explosive burst off the line suits him for any wide receiver duties -- running backs offer a broader blend. Not all successful running backs profile in the mold of Adrian Peterson, a dominant physical force who, when healthy, is at his best running north-south. Arian Foster, who recently retired,, was the ideal fit for the Texans offense he thrived in for several years because of his one-cut running style, equipped with decisive instincts and vision.ddddddddddddTheres no cookie cutter for the perfect back. Moreover, a running backs success on the field is not merely a direct result of his ability: The offensive line matters. Put any running back behind, for example, the Rams offensive line, and the results may not be so robust. Also of note is that Peterson, who has long been considered one of the games elite talents at the position, has been limited to just 31 carries so far this season because of injury.Without further ado, lets take a look at the best running back, according to folks in the league, as a rising star in Dallas gears up for a Thursday night matchup on Petersons home turf.? BRIGHTON, Mass. -- It was only .26 seconds, but it might as well have been forever. For years, the United States had been chasing the British in para-rowing, and last year at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette-le-Lac, France, the U.S. almost caught them. The 1,000-meter LTA (legs, trunk and arms) mixed coxed four race included six teams -- each with two men and two women with various disabilities and one able-bodied coxswain -- but with about 400 meters to go, it was a two-boat race.U.S. coach Ellen Minzner couldnt find a good vantage point, so she watched the race on a large video board. Her team had a strong cadence and was rowing well, she said. She thought the crew had more to give, but the experienced Great Britain team, which had won gold in the 2012 Paralympics and every world championship since, beat the U.S. at the line. The Brits finished in 3 minutes, 19.56 seconds, the Americans in 3:19.82.The U.S. team was crushed.I think the long and short of it is, we were up against an undefeated crew that had done this before four or five times in a row and was a very, very confident crew, Minzner said. I wouldnt say so much as we made errors, we were just up against somebody that was not at all worried by how close things were. They had been to the line before. Theyd been quite quick, and we just didnt match them stroke for stroke in the final quarter of the race. The U.S. hopes that will change next week at the Rio Paralympics, which begin with the opening ceremonies Wednesday. With the same four rowers and coxswain as in France, Great Britain again will be the favorite to win gold. But for years, the U.S. team has been narrowing the gap. Three of the four American rowers in Rio are carryovers from the team that competed in France, and the newbie of the group actually competed on the team in London in 2012.Theres not a day that goes by that you dont think how close we were to winning the gold, said Jaclyn Smith, one of the U.S. rowers. Its time to take that picture out of my head and actually go and win the gold. They are five distinct personalities with one collective goal: to win in Rio.DANI HANSEN IS the crier. It doesnt take much. She cries when she looks outside, teammate Dorian Weber said. The third of five daughters, Hansen was born with Erbs Palsy, the result of a birth injury that damaged nerves near her left shoulder and rendered her left arm paralyzed. Doctors said she likely would never use her left arm, which was shorter than her right, but her parents didnt listen. When Hansen was a baby, her mother constantly moved Danis arm. Her father helped Dani learn to navigate the monkey bars in their backyard. While Hansen struggled to button her pants, tie her shoes and braid her hair, her family never treated her as disabled. When Hansen was about 8 years old and struggling with her disability, Sharon told her: Everyone has an obstacle to overcome. This is yours. Work hard, keep trying and never say you cant, and one day youre going to compete in the Paralympic Games. After Minzner announced which athletes made the Paralympic team in June, Hansen raced out of the Community Rowing, Inc. boathouse in Brighton, Massachusetts, and called her parents. It was 7 a.m. back home in Patterson, California, and when her mom answered, Hansen started sobbing. She could get only one word out: Rio. It was the greatest information to be able to tell my parents, the greatest news, Hansen said. I was ecstatic, over the moon. It makes me emotional now. ... When I was younger my mom told me there was something I could be really great at even though I had a little bit of a handicap. I could use it to do something really cool. Thats what I remember, being like, Yeah!Hansen, 22, rows for the University of Washington. She did her first pushup at age 21, and then her first pull up. She still struggles to raise her arm over her head and turn it, and she said, I still have a lot of things I havent figured out yet.Theres still time.JACLYN SMITH IS the sarcastic one. Maybe its because she comes from a large Irish-Catholic family on Long Island. Maybe its because shes the daughter of two former police officers. Or maybe its just her.The second of four kids, Smith was born with a genetic condition called ocular albinism. She has no pigment in her hair, skin or eyes. She has photophobia, which is sensitivity to light, and nystagmus (her eyes move rapidly and involuntarily from side to side). Her vision is at a level that makes her legally blind.I was born and my parents were like, Whats up here? Smith said. So they went for some gene testing, and they found out there was a one-in-four chance that they would ever pass it on to their kids. Four kids later, Im the only sucker thats got it.Although doctors and counselors recommended Smith attend a specialized school to try to minimize any social issues she might encounter, her parents sent her to a mainstream school from nursery school through eighth grade. Before moving on to a prestigious all-girls Catholic high school, Smith had a meeting with a couple of counselors, a teacher and her parents. Someone asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up.Smith said a police officer, like her parents, her two grandfathers and several uncles. One of the counselors laughed at her.I couldnt believe it, Smith said. I started tearing up and thought, This is awkward. I was never the kid to cry -- Danis the crier -- but that just broke my heart.Smith, 23, started rowing her freshman year of high school. It was easier than sports she had played that involved a ball. She could do it all by feel. Shes been part of the U.S. para-rowing team since 2013 and is working on her second masters degree to become a school counselor.I dont want any kid to ever feel the way I did when I told them what my dream was and they laughed, Smith said.ZACH BURNS IS the quiet one.?And hes the youngest on the team at 19, which might explain his reluctance to be heard.A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Burns is a sophomore at the University of Michigan and a member of the Wolverines rowing team. His parents attended Michigan State for undergrad and then met at the U, as Burns called it, when they were in grad school. Burns grew up 10 minutes from campus going to Michigan football games and playing sports. He was born with a clubbed left foot that was surgically repaired when he was a year old. But there were lingering issues. His left leg is about a half-inch shorter than his right and significantly skinnier. His left calf is detached, his left quadriceps muscle has atrophied and he has limited flexibility in his left ankle. But Burns never felt there was anything substantially wrong with him. He grew up playing soccer and lacrosse. Sure, he might have to explain to a coach why when he got tired he would start limping, but he never felt significantly inhibited, and it didnt dawn on him until a few years ago that he would actually be eligible for a Paralympic team.I guess I didnt know what the Paralympics was about, Burns said. I think when most people think about the Paralympics they think of someone with no arms or no legs swimming, or someone in a wheelchair or something very visible. I have a club foot. I didnt realize there was a class where I would qualify for that, and once I did, I came here. Its been really helpful, too. Ive learned a lot about just like, I dont know, getting around some limitations.Burns has learned how to do a power squat on one leg: his left. And when the Olympics are over, the quiet one will be back at school studying to be an engineer -- and rowing.DORIAN WEBER IS?the inappropriate one. Born in Manhasset, New York, and raised in England, Weber is 34 and a pharmaceutical sales rep in Florida. He competed in the Paralympics in 2012 and was part of the U.S. able-bodied lightweight eight that finished third in the 2013 World Rowing Championship.Im told Im the one with no filter, he said. Depending on how strong you want your coffee, sometimes no filter is good.Weber bumped Ricky Vandegrift, who competed in the world championships last year, out of the boat and is more experienced than Hansen, Smith and Burns. So that makes him something else: the ringer.Like Burns, Weber was born with a club foot, but the disparity in his legs is hardly noticeable. He qualifies for the Paralympic team because he lacks flexibility in his feet, which hinders him a bit in rowing, but on a scale of 1-10, he described his disability as a 1.And Weber isnt shy about his expectations for the team in Rio.Ah, we should win, he said. The three of them and a previous athlete I replaced, Ricky, theyve been getting silver medals. Theyve narrowed [the gap with Great Britain] to within a second. When I did it [in 2012], the boat wasnt close to getting medals. Now theyve got very fit athletes who are at very high levels. ...I should be bringing hopefully enough to ... you cant guarantee anything in life. I wouldnt bet the house on it, but Id bet my crappy car on it.JENNY SICHEL IS?the self-described bossy one.?And shes empathetic. She has to be both. As the coxswain, Sichel steers the boat and is responsible for keeping the crew synchronized and motivated. At barely 110 pounds, shes a peanut with curly brown hair and a nurturing disposition. The 28-year-old also is the only athlete in the boat without a disability.A Clifton, New Jersey, native, Sichel took up rowing at Bryn Mawr College. She made the varsity as a freshman, but the next year, while in the middle of taking a rowing stroke, Sichel felt something in her back pop. She practiced the next day and felt it again. Finally, she had a trainer look at her back. She had a herniated disk. Her career as a rower was over.I ended up sitting at the boathouse painting all the oars and doing random miscellaneous things, like riding a launch, Sichel said. I love the team atmosphere. It was pretty devastating. I got into coxing and said, Hey, I could do this, and then I fell in love with coxing.Like the others on the 2015 team, she replayed what went on in that world championship race over and over. And then she let it go.For me, for probably a good month afterward it was definitely me repeating the race in my head, once, twice a day, overanalyze it, figure out what we couldve done better, Sichel said. After that month, I was in one of those positions where I can either use it as fodder to make myself work harder and use it as information, or I could kind of like let it affect me completely. So I definitely used it as fodder for this coming year.Great Britain rode a better race than us. By being able to say that and appreciate it is one thing, and being able to come back from that and perform better this year is a whole other ballgame. And thats where we are.The moments before an important para-rowing event tend to be quiet and still. For this one in Rio, Hansen will have to work hard not to cry. Weber will be in his zone. And Sichel will be organized and prepared, buoyed by the disappointment of 2015.The gold medal is the goal, of course, but it is not the final destination for any of the athletes or the coaches. It would mean they had traveled 1,000 meters in three minutes and change faster than any other team. But they are striving for more. The gold medal is great, but it sits on the wall for a long time, Minzner said. If thats the only thing we chase, I think we can limit ourselves. I feel like we want to be part of a team that is capable of heroics, thats amazing, and how do we get ourselves in the mindset where were capable of heroics? Theres a gold medal that comes at the end if were really heroic, so yes. But its more, how can they row in a way that makes them feel super proud and capable of heroics? I think that that is very, very important. Nike Air Zoom Outlet .com) - The game was all punts and field goals before Kodi Whitfields catch. Adidas NMD Outlet . COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Tom Cheek, the late Toronto announcer, was honoured with the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting. Cheek broadcast 4,306 consecutive Blue Jays games -- including the clubs two World Series victories -- from Torontos first contest until June 2, 2004. For Blue Jays fans, Cheeks most memorable call is his description of Joe Carters World Series-winning home run in 1993, when his deep baritone voice shouted into the microphone: "Touch em all Joe! Youll never hit a bigger home run in your life." The Florida-born Cheek was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame last month, and was added to the Blue Jays Level of Excellence at Rogers Centre in 2005, the year he died. Welcome to Week 10! Were down to four teams on bye this week, but in combination with the injuries, there are still difficult choices for fantasy owners. The teams on bye this week are the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts and the Oakland Raiders, while the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens have already played on Thursday (as the Browns lost yet another game while offering little in the way of fantasy point production).Injury concerns regarding players heading into the Sunday and Monday games can be critical. Each Saturday, this entry will be dedicated to each player who appears on the official weekly NFL game status injury report and how his status might impact fantasy teams. For those who might be new to this feature: Injury reports provide some insight into a players status. The NFL requires teams to submit practice injury reports several times a week, identifying the body part that is involved in the injury. This year, there has been a change in the language of injury reporting, per the league office. The most notable change is the removal of the probable designation. For more detailed information on the changes and what they mean, click here.Early in the week, the practice injury reports indicate whether a player did not practice, was limited in practice or was a full participant in practice. On Fridays, all teams file a game status injury report assigning one of the following designations: questionable, doubtful or out. The designations listed here reflect the injury reports filed with the league office Friday evening. Teams playing Monday night do not have to issue their designations until Saturday. The explanation for each designation is as follows:Out: This is the easy one: The guy is not playing this week.Questionable (Q): This remains the most dreaded player designation. By definition it means a player is uncertain to play. How uncertain is uncertain? There is no percentage or measurement scale, so this classification remains rather vague. Whether a player ends up active or inactive often comes down to a game-time decision based on how he feels on game-day morning or how he performs during warm-ups. Final inactives are due 90 minutes before kickoff.Doubtful (D): The doubtful designation means a player is unlikely to play that week. Rarely does a player labeled as doubtful end up playing, unless he experiences a major turnaround before game time. Each week in this Saturday feature, we run down a list of key fantasy players, by position, who appear in the Friday injury report, along with the injured body part as listed on the report, player status and any relevant developments or insight. The primary fantasy positions are covered (quarterback, running back, wide receiver and tight end). This year, at the end of each positional section, there is a subgroup of players: Players off game status injury report. The probable tag no longer exists, so players who would have been listed as probable in previous years are now simply removed from the report. This means there will be players who appear in the practice injury reports during the week but will not appear on the game-status report Friday, since they are presumed active for game day. They are included in this article so that fantasy owners can see where players who were on the practice injury report during the week have been upgraded in advance of the games. At the end, key fantasy players listed Friday as out for the weeks games will appear as a group.QuarterbacksRyan Fitzpatrick, New York Jets, knee, (Q): Fitzpatrick sprained the MCL in his left knee in Week 9 and coach Todd Bowles was clear: Fitzpatrick needed to practice in order to play Sunday. Practice he did, albeit on a limited basis daily. Although he is listed as questionable, ESPN.coms Rich Cimini makes the case for Fitzpatrick to be the likely starter. Still, Bowles has made it a game-time decision so fantasy owners who are rolling the dice with Fitzpatrick may want to wait until the team announces pregame inactives.Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys, back, (Q): It really doesnt matter for fantasy purposes whether Romo is active for this game or not as it clearly remains Dak Prescotts job for the time being. Still, this is a huge development from a health perspective. Romo has been medically cleared and returned to three consecutive days of full participation in practice after sitting out the first half of the season recovering from an L1 vertebral compression fracture. Even when he was playing regularly in recent history, we didnt see Romo practice three days in a row. The team has indicated they will wait until Sunday morning to determine whether he is active for this game. If nothing else, the Cowboys are close to having two healthy, capable quarterbacks, something any number of other teams would welcome at this point of the season.Players Off Game Status Injury Report:Alex Smith, QB, Kansas City Chiefs, head/ear: Smith sat out the Week 9 contest in what the Chiefs described as a precautionary move, but he resumed full practice immediately this week. The team announced Monday that Smith would be the starter, so his removal from the game status injury report comes as no surprise.Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers, knee: Roethlisberger returned to the playing field in Week 9, just three weeks after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to address a meniscal tear. He was rusty to start but improved as the game progressed. His mobility may not be what it once was, but he proved he could get through an entire game without a setback. Another week removed from surgery can only be a good thing, as is the fact that Roethlisberger was able to practice in full all week. His removal from the game status injury report proves the team has no concerns about his Sunday status.Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks, knee: The only body part still listed next to Wilsons name is knee and even that continues to improve. On Monday night, Wilson looked as good as he has since the season started, a clear reflection of his improving health. While he may not yet be 100 percent, his performance in Week 9 should instill more confidence that he can continue to improve in the second half. This week the Seahawks travel east to face the Patriots, not the easiest task, but Wilsons schedule is pretty appealing thereafter.Running BacksDoug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hamstring, (Q): Will this be the week we see the re-emergence of Martin? It appears that way, although its unclear just how much work Martin would handle in his first outing in two months. Out since Week 2 with a hamstring injury (his absence was extended by an aggravation of the original injury during a workout before the Week 5 Monday night game), Martin was in practice each day this week, culminating in a full practice effort Friday. Listed as questionable for the Week 10 game, Martins status was expected to be formally determined over the weekend leading up to a game-time announcement. The Tampa Bay Times is reporting Martin will indeed be active Sunday against the Bears.Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams, thigh, (Q): Gurley cropped up on the injury report with an unspecified thigh injury, and it kept him off the practice field Wednesday. Although he was also listed as a non-participant Thursday, the team did not conduct a practice, so this was merely a projection. Gurley returned Friday and posted a full practice, an encouraging sign. He traveled east with the team and the expectation, barring a surprise, is that he will play. The bigger challenge may be facing a stalwart Jets run defense.Carlos Hyde, San Francisco 49ers, shoulder, (Q): Hyde remained in a non-contact blue jersey in practice throughout the week and was listed as limited. He has said his shoulder continues to feel better, his range of motion has improved and he has raised his activity level somewhat, including hitting the blocking sled Thursday for the first time since his Week 6 injury. Still, there remains some doubt as to his game status since coach Chip Kelly indicated the medical staff will not make a decision until Sunday morning. Fantasy owners who are considering using Hyde should have a backup plan in place. This is a late game with kickoff at 4:25 p.m. ET.James Starks, Green Bay Packers, knee, (Q): It appears Starks has a chance to make his return from arthroscopic knee surgery on Sunday after practicing on a daily basis, albeit in limited fashion. Coach Mike McCarthy has praised Starks efforts in practice, but his Sunday status will still come down to a game-time decision. As ESPN.coms Rob Demovsky points out, the Packers may ease Starks back into action and continue to rely heavily on Ty Montgomery. Fantasy owners considering using Starks will want to check pregame inactives and temper expectations if Starks is indeed active.Christine Michael, Seattle Seahawks, hamstring, (Q): Surprise! Michael was a very late addition to the injury report when a hamstring injury turned up for him on Friday, leaving his Sunday status in doubt. With Rawls still out, the run game looks to be primarily in the hands of C.J. Prosise this week, even as coach Pete Carroll was already hinting at increased touches for him.Players Off Game Status Injury Report: Spencer Ware, Kansas City Chiefs, concussion: Ware was cleared to play earlier in the week. After a week of full practices, Ware is expected to play without limitation Sunday.Lamar Miller, Houston Texans, shoulder: Miller played in Week 8, sprained shoulder and all. He wasnt at full strength, but he still managed to get in the end zone. The bye week came at the perfect time for him, allowing him to return to practice each day this week (limited Wednesday and Thursday, full on Friday). His removal from the game status injury report indicates he is expected to play against the Jaguars.Jerick McKinnon, ankle and Ronnie Hillman, heel, Minnesota Vikings: McKinnon overcame an ankle injury that kept him out of practice early last week to play in the Week 9 contest. His production was limited however (just eight yards on seven carries) and he was in a workload share with Ronnie Hillman and Matt Asiata. McKinnons ankle has improved to the point where he was a full participant in practice throughout the week and he was removed from the game status injury report. Still, its hard to predict how the division of carries will play out this week against Washington. As for Hillman, he appeared on the practice injury report but participated fully all week and is removed from the game status injury report. Expect McKinnon, Hillman and Asiata to all see time on the field.Devontae Booker, Denver Broncos, shoulder: Booker played in Week 9 after sustaining a bruised shoulder the week before and had no reported setbacks. He was a full participant in practice throughout the week, and his removal from the game status injury report comes as no surprise.KaDeem Carey, Chicago Bears, illness: Carey appeared on the injury report due to illness and missed a practice day Wednesday. He was back in full practice Thursday and Friday, however, and is off the game status injury report.Matt Forte, New York Jets, knee: This is now familiar; Forte has a light day Wednesday, then a full day Thursday and Friday. He is expected to make his usual start Sunday.DeMarco Murray, toe and Derrick Henry, calf, Tennessee Titans: The surprise here is Henry, who didnt participate in practice until Friday. Henry strained his calf in pregame warmups last Sunday and was held out of the game. It may be that the decision to rest him in Week 9 aided in his quick recovery. Henry was back as a full participant in Fridays practice, and the team has enough confidence in his health to completely remove him from the game status injury report.Murray has been on the injury report for a couple weeks now with a right toe injury. This week, coach Mike Mularkey said Murrays toe is improving but still painful, given the repeated planting and cutting he subjects it to while playing. Murray was given an off day Wednesday, had a limited practice Thursday and returned to full work Friday. There is no reason to expect him to suddenly give up a dramatic portion of the workload unless he sustains an in-game setback (or another injury). But the insurance Henry provides has to give the Titans some peace of mind, and it wouldnt be surprising to see him at least get some spot work this week.Wide ReceiversDez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys, knee, (Q): It seems a bit odd that Bryant continues to be listed as questionable because of his knee since he has already played in two games since the injury and he has practiced without limitation all week. There have been no hints out of Dallas that Bryant is expected to do anything other than suit up and play.Allen Hurns, Jacksonville Jaguars, concussion, (Q): Hurns sat out Wednesdays practice with a concussion but received clearance to return to limited practice Thursday. He was again a limited participant Friday but had yet to receive full clearance for game play, hence the questionable designation. As of now, his status remains uncertain. This is an early game Sunday, so there will be time for fantasy owners to make a roster change if Hurns cannot go.Will Fuller V, Houston Texans, knee, (Q): Fuller exited the Week 8 game against the Lions with a knee injury. Despite the bye week in the interim, Fuller was limited in practice throughout this week. Between Braxton Miller taking increased practice reps with the first team and coach Bill OBrien saying early in the week that Fuller could be a game-time call, its hard to feel confident about his questionable status. Fantasy owners may want to look elsewhere.Travis Benjamin, knee, (D) and Tyrell Williams, knee, (Q), San Diego Chargers: It is clear that Benjamin is struggling with his PCL-injured knee. Visibly in and out of last weeks contest, he was a non-participant in practice the entire week, a downgrade from what he has done in the past. The doubtful designation certainly makes it appear he will not be available for the Chargers Sunday.Williams had a more typical week. He was not in practice Wednesday but returned to limited work Thursday and Friday. Given that he has played through the questionable tag for several weeks, it stands to reason Williams will do the same again. Perhaps no team will be more excited for their bye than the decimated Chargers, who will have next week off. In the meantime, theyll host the Dolphins at home Sunday in a late (4:05 p.m. ET) kickoff.Jarvis Landry, Miami Dolphins, shoulder, (Q): Landry was added to the injury report Thursday when he did not practice after experiencing discomfort Wednesday. He was able to return to a limited practice on Friday but his status remains uncertain. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald says the Dolphins expect Landry to play.DeSean Jackson, Washington Redskins, shoulder, (D): Jackson didnt participate in a single practice in order to rest his shoulder. Despite an MRI that turned up no significant structural damage, coach Jay Gruden said Jackson was dealing with rotator cuff issues. The doubtful tag makes it easy for fantasy owners to stay away; the hope is that this will be a short-lived absence.Julian Edelman, foot and Chris Hogan, back, (Q), New England Patriots: Edelman has been a fixture on the injury report because of his foot and continues to stay limited in practice throughout the week. He has not missed any games, and that is not expected to change this week.Hogan is a different story. He was added to the Patriots injury report Friday because of his back and did not practice. There is little detail as to the nature or severity of Hogans ailment, but a Friday addition to the injury report with a questionable designation heading into a Sunday night game all makes for trouble for fantasy owners.Victor Cruz, New York Giants, ankle, (Q): Cruz sprained his ankle in Week 9, and while his teammate Odell Beckham Jr. did not expect him to miss time, Cruz appeared a little more cautious. He did say that if he missed Monday nights game, he planned on being available the next week. Cruz was held out of practice all week but has been doing some side work with the rehab staff. Given Cruzs recent injury history, it would not come as a surprise if the team held him out. Either way, it appears the decision will not be finalized until Monday.Eddie Royal, Chicago Bears, toe, (Q): Royal has been out since Week 6 with a toe injury. Coming out of the Week 9 bye, Royal was a daily practice participant on a limited basis. Although he comes into the game as questionable, ESPN.coms Jeff Dickerson reports Royal has made it clear he wants to play in this game. Outside of Week 4, Royals fantasy production has been limited, and Alshon Jeffery is expected to continue to be Cutlers lead target.Players Off Game Status Injury Report: Randall Cobb, Green Bay Packers, hamstring: This is great news. Cobb missed the Week 8 contest with a hamstring injury sustained the week before. In Week 9, Cobb was declared active but remained on the sidelines for the bulk of the game, entering late and notching just two receptions. One happened to result in a touchdown, but it was clear the team was avoiding anything that would force Cobb to stretch the field. This week, Cobb participated in daily practices on a limited basis, and by the end of the week the team was confident enough in his health to remove him from the game status injury report.Mike Evans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, concussion: Evans now says he didnt have a concussion, but he was placed in the concussion protocol nonetheless. He was cleared for full practice early in the week and there was little doubt he would be ready for the Week 10 game after practicing daily without setbacks. His removal from the game status injury report underscores the teams expectation that he will play his usual role.John Brown, hamstring and Larry Fitzgerald, ankle, Arizona Cardinals: Its a great relief to fantasy owners to see both of these players off the injury report in advance of Sundays game. Brown has been battling some issues related to his hamstring for several weeks while Fitzgerald sprained his ankle just last week. Both were kept to limited practices Wednesday and Thursday. Fitzgerald remained limited Friday, undoubtedly a means of protecting him for game day, while Brown upgraded to full work Friday. Both are expected to play Sunday, but its worth noting that coach Bruce Arians bumped J.J. Nelson up to No. 2 receiver (Michael Floyd comes in at No. 3 while Brown is now No.4). It seems the most consistent option is Fitzgerald, who remains, unsurprisingly, the number one receiver for Arizona.Brandon Marshall, New York Jets, foot: Marshall is on the injury report weekly but is removed for games and continues to play. He will do the same again this week.Tight EndsHunter Henry, San Diego Chargers, knee, (Q): Henry is still bothered by his knee and was only a limited participant in practice Wednesday and Thursday. He was able to upgrade to full practice Friday, and it appears he will take the field Sunday alongside Antonio Gates (no longer on the injury report). Fantasy owners should be aware that this is a late game (4:05 p.m. ET) and should have a backup plan in the event Henry is inactive.Martellus Bennett, New England Patriots, ankle, (Q): Nothing has changed here. Bennett continues to appear on the injury report as he is limited in practice to rest his ankle. He has yet to miss a game, so there is little reason to worry about his status heading into Sunday nights contest against the Seahawks.Jared Cook, Green Bay Packers, ankle, (D): The Packers are excited about the return of Cook to practice after he missed more than a month with an ankle injury. Although he is making progress, he is not quite game ready, hence the doubtful tag. Cook is expected to sit this week out but his return does not appear far off.Players Off Game Status Injury Report: Delanie Walker, Tennessee Titans, groin: Last week Walker was a late addition to the injury report , et he played and emerged no worse for the wear. Its a relief for fantasy owners to see him off the game status injury report heading into Week 10 as there are no tough decisions to make. Walker was a full participant throughout the week and is expected to play against the Packers.Jimmy Graham, Seattle Seahawks, knee: Graham was running with abandon Monday night, looking like the Jimmy Graham who used to play in New Orleans. Its great to see an athlete return from a career-threatening injury, not just to play once again but to play at his former level. Although he continues to appear on the practice injury report, Graham is off the game status injury report as usual.Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers, knee: Despite being listed on the practice injury report because of his knee, Gates was a full practice participant both Thursday and Friday. With Hunter Henry listed as questionable, Gates is the favored option (although Henry is likely to play).Players already ruled outThis space is intended for a list of key players, not including those who have been moved to injured reserve status, who are officially listed as Out for the upcoming game.Tevin Coleman, RB, Atlanta Falcons, hamstring: Coleman will now miss his third straight game with a hamstring strain. He has not yet returned to practice, but he has increased his running activity. With the Falcons on bye next week, it appears Coleman could be ready to return in Week 12.Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, foot: Rodgers absence doesnt come as much of a surprise considering he remained out of practice the entire week. He did shed the walking boot early in the week but was wearing it again Friday. It appears he has a ways to go before he can return to action.Jeremy Maclin, WR, Kansas City Chiefs, groin: Maclin tried to play through a groin injury in Week 9 but he didnt last long. After his exit in the first quarter, head coach Andy Reid indicated Maclin could miss some time. He didnt practice all week and has already been ruled out for Week 10.Jacob Tamme, TE, Atlanta Falcons, shoulder: After Tamme was injured in Week 8, head coach Dan Quinn said he didnt believe it to be a long-term injury. Still, Tamme will now miss his second straight game and ESPN.coms Vaughn McClure reports Tamme is considering surgery. It certainly sounds like it could be a long-term injury now.DeAngelo Williams, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers, knee: Williams underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday and is out for this week. The team has offered little in the way of detail or timetable, but one would expect him to be out several weeks at a minimum.Thomas Rawls, RB, Seattle Seahawks, fibula: Rawls has resumed running, but his earliest projected return was bumped to Week 11. He remains out this week.Be sure to check out Fantasy Football Now, Sundays on ESPN2 at 11 a.m. ET, for last-minute inactives, rankings, injury impact and more! Jermaine Whitehead . Herath recorded figures of 5-89 - his first five-wicket haul against Zimbabwe - to bowl the home side out for 272 and give Sri Lanka a 232-run lead in the first innings. But after the tourists opted not to enforce the follow-on, fast bowler Carl Mumba picked up three wickets to reduce Sri Lanka to 84-4.With opener Dimuth Karunaratne scoring an unbeaten 54 - his third fifty-plus score in four innings - Sri Lanka went to stumps on 102-4, giving them an overall lead of 334 with two days to play.Although Herath had come into the series with 26 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, he had never played against Zimbabwe in a 17-year career. On Tuesday he joined countryman Muttiah Muralitharan and South Africas Dale Steyn among an elite group of bowlers with five-wicket hauls against all of the other nine Test-playing nations. If you take my career until 2009, I had only taken about 40 wickets with no five-wicket hauls, said Herath. So if you take the last seven or eight years, Ive done a consistent job for the national team. Its a different sort of achievement, which makes me very happy. Sri Lanka batsman Dimuth Karunaratne ended the day unbeaten on 54 Although Zimbabwe reached 134-2 on the third morning in reply to Sri Lankas first innings total of 504, they ultimately succumbed to spin, with off-spinner Dilruwan Perera picking up 3-51 as the hosts lost their last five wickets for just 19 runs.ddddddddddddHowever, it was fast bowler Suranga Lakmal who set Sri Lanka on their way in the morning session when he had Craig Ervine caught at slip for 64 in the eighth over of the day.Herath got in on the action when he bowled Brian Chari for a career-best 80 with a quicker delivery, and then dismissed Malcolm Waller for 18 on the stroke of lunch.Zimbabwe had been rescued by their lower order in the first Test, but after the interval Perera ensured there would be no such recovery as he grabbed three wickets in three overs, including Sean Williams for 58 and Peter Moor for 33.All that was left was for the stand-in captain to pick up a record fifth wicket, as he trapped Carl Mumba lbw.Sri Lanka then tumbled to 44-3 in their second innings, as Zimbabwes bowlers were rewarded for greater consistency.Mumba had Kaushal Silva and Kusal Mendis caught in front of the wicket, while Cremer trapped Upul Tharanga lbw.First-innings centurion Dhananjaya de Silva attempted to rebuild with Karunaratne, but scooped a low full toss straight to extra cover in the final half-hour of the day.Nevertheless, Zimbabwe faced a serious deficit as they look to level the two-match series. Lets be honest, if they put another 100 on it will be a lot, said batting coach Lance Klusener. But at the same time wed like to finish this Test match on our terms. ' ' '

Everton boss Ronald Koeman will be hoping that last weekends comeback draw against Manchester United will be sufficient to spark his side into life.Another opportunity presents itself Saturday against Watford at Vicarage Road. The Toffees (5-5-4) have won just one out of their last nine Premier League matches -- an unacceptably poor run for such a talented group of players -- but they may have turned a corner after rescuing a point from a losing position against United last week.A late penalty, given away by former Evertonian Marouane Fellaini, proved the critical moment in the match, but Koeman was keen to praise the impact that his teams substitutes made after halftime. The three substitutes had a big impact in the game, the Koeman said. It was deserved because we were the most dangerous team in the second half. While its true that Everton did improve as the game went on, the coachs comments appear just as likely to have been a thinly veiled message to midfielder Ross Barkley, who was pictured in tears on the substitutes bench when left unused. The much-heralded Barkley has developed a slightly overhyped reputation as a match-winner since his breakthrough into the first team, yet still has plenty to add to his game. Hence Koemans decision not to introduce the youngster into such a finely poised match.I understand it is difficult, I understand the expectation, Koeman said of Barkleys slow development last month. He is a boy from the club. Of course he is someone I can see improve -- I am really involved in his process, of course.ddddddddddddBut, finally, it is up to the player. Midfielder Muhamed Besic is also a long-term absentee, but Seamus Coleman could be fit after a rib injury. Both meetings between these teams last season ended in draws. Prior to that, Everton had won nine straight games against the Hornets and the Toffees havent lost this fixture in 29 years. ' ' '
OAKLAND, Calif. -- On a night when the starters for both teams spent most of the night on the sideline, Seattle running back Thomas Rawls made a big statement by getting on the field for only a few plays.Rawls carried twice for 8 yards in his first game in more than eight months since breaking his ankle and the Seahawks finished the preseason by beating the Oakland Raiders 23-21 on Thursday night. The fact that he got in there for a few plays, he got knocked a couple times, its fantastic, coach Pete Carroll said. Its an incredible comeback. Hes worked so hard to get this done and Im just so happy for him.Ryan Robinson returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown and Troymaine Pope and Alex Collins ran for scores in the fourth quarter to lead the Seahawks to the win.But Rawls performance was the most noteworthy as he proved he is ready to play in the season opener on Sept. 11 and seize the starting job vacated when Marshawn Lynch retired.I think it was important a little bit. Maybe a confidence boost, Rawls said. Even if I didnt play I think I still would have been fine but Im glad I got a chance to get out here with my teammates and contribute. With most of Seattles starters only playing one series and the bulk of Oaklands first-stringers sitting out the entire game, there was little star power on the field. The first touchdown came early in the fourth quarter on the third turnover in a five-play span. After George Atkinson III and Trevone Boykin traded fumbles, Oakland rookie quarterback Connor Cook was pressured on a rollout. Robinson stepped in front of the pass and returned it for the score that made it 9-8.Thats completely on me, Cook said. I have to see that and ditch it. It has to be thrown at his feet or thrown out of bounds, dont try and be a hero.Oakland defensive lineman Denico Autry had a sack, five tackles for loss and a pass defensed. Autry also teamed with James Cowser to get pressure on Boykin in the end zone leading to an intentional grounding penalty that resulted in a safety and the only points in the first half.ANTHEM PROTESTSeahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane joined Colin Kaepernicks national anthem protest. Lane sat on the Seattle bench while the rest of his teammates stood during the anthem before the game. Lane said he did not tell any of his teammates of his plans before the game and that he will continue to do it until he feels justice has been served.I dont mean no disrespect toward anybody, but Im just standing behind what I believe, Lane said.ROOKIE WATCHSeahawks: Boykin was 7 for 15 for 72 yards passing as he showed a good ability to escape pressure and extend plays. He also ran for 24 yards on four carries.Raiders: Cook got his most extensive time of the preseason, coming in at the start of the second quarter in place of Matt McGloin. Cook went 15 for 30 for 145 yards and one interception.INJURY UPDATESeahawks: Rookie CB DeAndre Elliott was taken to the locker room on a cart in the second half with an undisclosed injury.Raiders: OL Austin Howard limped off the field in the second quarter after rolling his ankle and didnt return. Del Rio said he doesnt believe the injury is serious.POSITION BATTLESSeahawks: Garry Gilliam and JMarcus Webb rotated at right tackle as Seattle waits to determine who will start when the season begins.Raiders: Rookies DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard once again got extensive time as they compete to be Latavius Murrays backup. Washington ran for 14 yards on 11 carries and caught four passes for 39 yards. Richard had three carries for 10 yards and one catch for 7 yards.QUOTABLESeahawks: I just like what hes doing and Im standing behind him, Lane said of his relationship with Kaepernick.Raiders: A little up and down. NEW YORK -- Captain John Tavares thinks the New York Islanders have room for improvement, even after winning three of four games. It needs to happen fast with whats next on the schedule.Tavares had two goals and an assist, Johnny Boychuk scored for the second straight game and the Islanders beat the Minnesota Wild 6-3 on Sunday night.Calvin de Haan, Alan Quine and Thomas Hickey also scored to help New York get its highest scoring total of the year. The Islanders are 3-3-0 and face the first-place Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday and defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.I still think we can get a lot better, Tavares said. We still havent gotten the power play going. Five-on-five certainly good to see a few go in for a lot of guys. ... So build on it and get ready for a tough week coming up.Thomas Greiss stopped 26 shots for his first win in two starts this season.Islanders rookie Anthony Beauvillier had two assists, giving the 19-year-old at least a point in three straight games. He played well, New York coach Jack Capuano said. I think hes going to be a good player in this league for a long time. He just plays with tenacity, grit and determination in his game.New York failed on its lone power play, falling to 1 for 15 on the season.Zach Parise scored twice for Minnesota to top 300 goals for his career, and Nino Niederreiter also scored. Second-string goalie Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves.Trailing 1-0 early in the second period, the Islanders took the lead with three goals 3:08 apart.Tavares got a pass in the slot from Josh Bailey and fired it in for his second of the season at 4:23. Then, de Haan fired a wrist shot from beyond the left faceoff circle past Kuemper for his first of the season 34 seconds later. Boychuk capped the flurry and made it 3-1 at 7:31 when he fired a slap shot from the right point past Kuempers glove side. After getting denied in close by Greiss twice earlier in the period, Parise pulled the Wild within one with 7:23 left. Greiss appeared to stop a slow puck before it crossed the line, but a video review showed it was across just before the goalie knocked it away with his right pad. It gave Parise 20 goals in 48 career games against the Islanders.I had no idea, really, Parise said of the goal. Even after they reviewed it, I was standing behind the net, and one of the linesmen asked me, `Did that go in? and I said `I dont think so. It really caught us off guard. I didnt see it cross and hit the back of his leg.The Islanders put the game away in the third. Quine took a pass from Beauvillier, skated forward and fired a shot past Kuemper at 6:29 to restore New Yorks two-goal lead. Hickey pushed the lead to 5-2 with a wrist shot just over two minutes later. The goals by Boychuk, de Haan and Hickey gave the Islanders five goals by defensemen in the last two games, after Boychuk and Dennis Seidenberg scored in the 3-2 win over Arizona on Friday night.Niederreiter, the No. 5 overall selection by the Islanders in the 2010 NHL draft, pulled the Wild within two with 2:48 left for his seventh point (four goals, three assists) in seven games against his former team.Tavares added an empty-netter with 1:43 left to cap the scoring. ANTWERP, Belgium -- Unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman upset top-seeded David Goffin 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to reach the European Open final on Saturday. He gained some revenge after Goffin -- now ranked 12 in the world -- routed him in straight sets, dropping just six games, when Belgium beat Argentina in last years Davis Cup semifinals. It was amazing for me, Schwartzman said after securing his first win 12 matches against a top-20 player.Schwartzman will need to produce another upset in the final against third-seeded Richard Gasquet, who earlier staged an impressive comeback to beat Britains Kyle Edmund 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.Schwartzman dropped serve twice in the first set but broke Goffin for the third time to clinch it.Goffin took both of his chances on Schwartzmans serve in the second set, where he did not face a break point, and looked to have regained his composure after securing an early break in the deciding set.But the 77th-ranked Schwartzman brokee straight back and, although he dropped his serve again, took Goffins twice more.ddddddddddddSchwartzman won the only title of his career this year on outdoor clay in Istanbul.Gasquet was in deep trouble at 4-2 down in the second set, but broke Edmunds serve in the eighth game and once more to level the match. He was in complete control in the deciding set, in which he did not concede a chance on his serve and forced nine on Edmunds serve, breaking him twice. The win moved Gasquet into his third final of the season and 27th of his career. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets won another game with a strong finish.Jack Johnson, Cam Atkinson and Seth Jones each had a goal and an assist as the Blue Jackets beat the New York Islanders 6-2 for their sixth straight win.Josh Anderson, Brandon Saad and Lukas Sedlak also scored for Columbus and Sergei Bobrovsky had 25 saves.Ive never been on a team thats been in this position at this point of the year, Johnson said of his teams surge. And Ive been in the league 10 years. You really appreciate it when youre having a season like this.Josh Bailey and John Tavares scored for New York, which had earned a point in a season-high five straight games (4-0-1). Jaroslav Halak made 32 saves until he was pulled after the Blue Jackets scored four consecutive goals in the third period.Anderson put Columbus ahead 3-2 at 2:19 when he picked off a defensive pass and banged it in from the slot seconds after coming onto the ice for his shift.Saad, Sedlak and Jones scored in a 5-minute span to make it 6-2 with 5:37 to go.Youre not going to play good when you make dumb decisions with the puck, Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. It has nothing to do structurally. It has nothing to do goaltending-wise. We just made some bad decisions.New Yorks third-string goalie Jean-Francois Berube then replaced Halak and stopped the one shot he faced in his season debut. The Islanders came out quick and it took Columbus a while to get going. New York took a 1-0 lead 5:59 in when a defensive pass by the Blue Jackets Sam Gagner at the boards was deflected by Bailey, and the popup was bobbled by Bobrovsky into the net. Bailey was given credit for an unassisted goal.We just had to keep on playing, get our feet, simply our game, and I thought we did a good job with that, Columbus coach John Tortorella said of the Blue Jackets slow start. Weve done a good job of that all year long, as far as just trying to play and not worry about what happened. The Blue Jackets tied it up on a power play with 6:01 left in the first when Johnson wound up from just inside the neutral zone and fired a bullet past Halak. It was Johnsons first goal of the season.Columbus Brandon Dubinsky and New Yorks Travis Harmonic went to the penalty box for 5 minutes each when both threw down the gloves and threw punches near the end of the first quarter.Columbus took a 2-1 lead when a speeding Atkinson took a pass from Johnson in the neutral zone and beat Halak on the breakaway 10:16 into the second. TORONTO -- For the first time since Team North America came together, coach Todd McLellan had to re-instill some belief. With players slumping at their lockers after allowing Russia to score four goals in under seven minutes, McLellan told them they were better than they thought they were at that moment. Young North America was the better team Monday night, but a lopsided stretch was enough to give Russia a much-needed 4-3 victory in a fast-paced, end-to-end showcase of the sport at the World Cup of Hockey.Vladislav Namestnikov, Nikita Kucherov, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Vladimir Tarasenko scored on consecutive shots during a 6:14 stretch, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 42 saves on 45 shots to hand the 23-and-under mix of American and Canadian players its first loss of the tournament. We just lost our way for 10 minutes, McLellan said. I thought we were hesitant. ... They were quicker, they were stronger. They stripped us a number of times. We looked slow, and thats not the way we play. Slow reading, slow reacting and slow to the scoreboard.Toronto Maple Leafs 2016 No. 1 pick Auston Matthews scored on a 2-on-1 rush off a pass from Edmonton Oilers 2015 No. 1 pick Connor McDavid, and Morgan Rielly and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had goals for North America (1-1), which outshot Russia 45-23.Russias goals in quick succession were team goals, McLellan said, but they also led to the end of goaltender Matt Murrays night. Murray, who stopped the first 15 shots he faced before Russia broke through, jammed his thumb in the second period, but McLellan said he was healthy enough to play.Murray was on the wrong end of a young teams young mistakes. The efficiency of speed and skill that worked in a win over Finland on Sunday stopped for a short period of time against high-powered Russia, and it proved disastrous. We got away from our game, trying to be too cute and getting pucks instead of going to the net going east to west too much, Matthews said. Theyre a team that likes to turn the puck over and get going the other way. Thats something weve got to clean up.On their heels early, the Russians responded well after opening the World Cup with a loss to Sweden. Their penalty kill went 6 for 7, led by Bobrovsky, whoo also stopped McDavid on a second-period breakaway.ddddddddddddObviously we knew we cant lose the game, captain Alex Ovechkin said. If we lose the game were obviously out of the tournament. Back to back, I think we played a solid second and our penalty-kill guys, (Ivan) Telegin, blocked the shots, Bobrovsky. You can see everybody sacrificing, and we get the result. It wasnt the result North America wanted, but a furious third-period comeback showed that it didnt lose confidence. McDavid blamed himself and his teammates for failing to capitalize on an extended 5-on-3 power play.We definitely let the team down there, McDavid said.North America still had another opportunity 6 on 4 in the final minute. Shayne Gostisbehere hit the post behind Bobrovsky with 14 seconds left, and Russia held on.Thats not the way to play the Russians, but I thought we did a good job of responding and really making a game of it, McDavid said. I think thats a good sign, but in a short tournament like this, we needed the points.North America was without top defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who McLellan called day to day with an upper-body injury. Jacob Trouba replaced him, but Ekblads absence created a void of extra minutes that defensemen had to fill. Many made costly mistakes, and Russia was more than willing and able to take advantage of turnovers and defensive mix-ups.I think some hockey god got on our side, and we just got good luck, said Kuznetsov, who made a FIFA inspired wing-flapping celebration after his goal. For all of Russias energy during its stretch, losing like that taught North America a lesson about regaining composure and the value of playing a complete 60 minutes.Unfortunately, when it goes into the record books, all 60 count, McLellan said.North America wraps up round-robin play Wednesday against Sweden, while Russia faces Finland on Thursday.Game notes John Gibson only faced four shots in relief of Murray and stopped them all. ... They won 110 games from 1994 to 2005, and after an Oct. 22, 2005, loss to Ohio Northern, they rattled off 112 straight wins entering Saturday.?The top-ranked team in D-III, Mount Union (9-1, 8-1) also had won 98 games in a row at home before Saturdays defeat. And this marks the first time in 24 years that it hasnt won the OAC title.?How did No. 16 John Carroll do it??In a back-and-forth contest, the Blue Streaks went ahead for good when QB Anthony Moeglin hit William Woods with a 24-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds to play. Minutes earlier, Mount Union had taken a 28-25 lead when QB Dom Davis hit Braeden Friss with a 37-yard scoring pass, but that advantage proved short-lived.?Moeglin finished the day with 239 yards passing and three TDs.?Its safe to say that hes become a legend on the John Carroll campus, John Carroll wide receiver William Woods said of Moeglin. He helped snap a 20-plus [losing] streak against Mount Union. Anthonys a legend for sure.John Carroll was effective defensively, sacking Davis, a freshman, seven times. It also held running back Bradley Mitchell, who entered Saturday fourth all time at Mount Union with 53 TDs, to just 53 yards on 18 carries.?Mount Union has won two of the last four D-III championships. SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Jimmy Walker overcame a few wild tee shots with four birdies on the back nine for a 2-under 68 and a one-shot lead over defending champion Jason Day going into the final round of the rain-plagued PGA Championship. This already was shaping up as a major like no other.Even as Walker and Day were finishing their rounds, the fourth round already had begun on rain-soaked Baltusrol. The PGA of America chose not to redo pairings for the final round because it was the only chance to finish by Sunday. Then, the PGA decided to play preferred lies for the final round, which had not happened in a major in more than a half-century. That means players will be able to lift, clean and place their balls anywhere but the rough.Walker, who was at 11-under 199, was among 10 players who didnt even hit a shot Saturday because of storms that flooded the Lower Course at Baltusrol. He had never contended in a major until this week, and went into the final 18 holes having been at least tied for the lead all three rounds.I made a couple of tentative swings early, Walker said. I just said, `Trust it man, youre swinging it good. Keep the pedal down. The final round figured to be the toughest, especially with the cast of characters behind him.Day surged into the lead with a 75-foot birdie putt on No. 7 from the front to the back of the green, and a tee shot to 4 feet on the par-3 ninth. Walker and Robert Streb, who shot a 63 on Friday to share the 36-hole lead, began to struggle off the tee and on the green, both dropping two shots behind Day at one point.Day settled into a string of pars on the easier back nine until finishing with a birdie for a 67. It was his seventh straight round of 68 or better in the PGA Championship.I went a stretch of eight holes without a birdie and I needed one to get some motivation for the fourth round, Day said. But I played some nice golf out there. He is trying to join Tiger Woods as the only players to win the PGA Championship in consecutive years since it went to stroke play in 1958.It would be really nice to get that second major under my belt, Day said. I dont want to win just one for my career.Unlike the British Open two weeks ago, this is hardly a two-man race.Henrik Stenson, who won the duel at Royal Troon with a record score in a major, piled up enough birdies on the back nine for a 67 and was two shots behind in his bid to join Ben Hogan as the only players to win back-to-back majors at age 40.Brooks Koepka, playing for the first time since the U.S. Open because of an ankle injury, had a bogey-free 66 and was two shots behind. A big week by Koepka could all but clinch a spot on his first Ryder Cup team.Streb, meanwhile, didnt make his first birdie until the 17th hole, only to three-putt from just inside 8 feet for bogey on the 18th and a 72. He was four shots behind, along with William McGirt (66) and Hideki Matsuyama (67).Jordan Spieth finished with eight straight pars, missing good birdie chances along the way, and had to settle for a 69. That left him seven shots behind, which would require a record-tying comeback at the PGA Championship to have any chance.Patrick Reed also wasted a good opportunity, making double bogey on the sixth hole and shooting 70 to finish six shots behind. The PGA Championship was trying to avoid its second straight Monday finish at Baltusrol. LONDON -- Usain Bolt put down a marker ahead of the Rio Olympics as he won the 200 metres at the Anniversary Games with a time of 19.89 seconds and fired a warning to his American rivals, accusing them of disrespect. It was the reigning Olympic champions first 200m of the year. He was forced to pull out of the Jamaica trials earlier in July with a hamstring injury, but any doubts over his fitness and form were allayed on Friday as he stormed to victory at the stadium where he took three gold medals at London 2012.Im getting there. Im not fully in shape. I need more work, Bolt said. But over time Ill be fine, Ill just keep doing the work.It wasnt perfect. I came off the corner trying to hold my form. Im happy with my execution and hopefully my coach is.Im definitely happy I could come here and finish the race with no injuries. Im going to Rio to defend my titles.Bolts main rival for the Olympic crown will be Justin Gatlin, who was one of a number of American sprinters to question Bolts selection for Rio despite missing the Jamaican trials.Hes injured and he has a medical pass, Gatlin said. Thats what his country does. Our country doesnt do that. However, Bolt delivered a warning to Gatlin and those challenging him for his 100 and 200 crowns, saying he felt he was the victim of disrespectful comments from the American campI felt it was a joke. I felt it was a disrespect [if] they think Id back out of a trials, Bolt said. Ive proven myself year on year that Im the greatest. I laughed when I hheard it.dddddddddddd. I was disappointed, especially in Justin Gatlin.Bolt was the biggest draw at the Anniversary Games and received a huge roar when he was paraded around the track on the back of a car. The roars rose when he stormed home to his 200m triumph, but he was visibly frustrated after the delayed start to the race. After a false start by Sean McLean, and then an interruption due to interference from the PA system, Bolt stormed home. Alonso Edward was second and Adam Gemili third. He had to prove his fitness to the Jamaica selectors after his hamstring injury ruled him out of the Jamaica trials. Having completed his first 200 of 2016, he will now return to Jamaica for further training before he looks to defend his 100, 200 and 4x100 titles in Rio, looking to complete a triple-triple in the process. The hamstring strain came at an unfortunate time, just 35 days before the start of the Rio Games. But Bolt seems to have fully recovered and his troublesome back is also behaving, with him saying on Thursday it was OK and it would hold up so he can compete and stay on track. After winning the 200 at the Anniversary Games, his sole focus is now Rio where he will lock horns with rival Gatlin, who won both the 100 and 200 at the U.S. Olympic trials with times of 9.8 and 19.75 seconds, respectively.Information from ESPNs Tristan Barclay was used in this report. CLEVELAND -- Joe Flaccos return has the Baltimore Ravens looking more like themselves. The Browns, well, they havent changed at all.Flacco, whose 2015 season was cut short by a knee injury and surgery, overcame a pair of interceptions by throwing two touchdown passes to Mike Wallace, and the Ravens rallied from a 20-point deficit in the first quarter to beat snake-bitten Cleveland 25-20 on Sunday. In danger of getting blown out early, the Ravens (2-0) blocked an extra-point and returned it 63 yards for a rare, two-point defensive conversion to ignite their comeback against a Cleveland team with 17 rookies on its roster. It wasnt pretty, it wasnt great. We werent perfect, said Flacco, who passed for 302 yards and led the second-largest comeback in Baltimore history. Do you want to play that kind of game in September? Not necessarily, but every single game in January and come February, where we hope to be, is going to be like that. Over the years, these games have just taken us to that next level and really made us mentally tough so when we get into those games, we dont blink. The Browns (0-2), meanwhile, are running out of quarterbacks .Josh McCown showed his toughness by playing every snap despite an injured left shoulder, but the 37-year-old couldnt lift his arm following the game and could miss time.We will see, said McCown, who was replacing the injured Robert Griffin III. My mindset is that everything will be all right and we will move ahead business as usual. It is just a matter of letting the doctors and trainers do their job, and my expectations are to play some ball.If McCowns injury wasnt enough, Cleveland also lost starting center Cam Erving, who suffered a bruised lung and will remain hospitalized.Flaccos injury was the final blow to a 5-11 finish last season for the Ravens, who are accustomed to playing in the postseason. But now with its cool-as-ice quarterback back, Baltimore is again a team to be reckoned with. But the Ravens better avoid the kind of slow start they had in their first road game. Just over 10 minutes after kickoff, the Browns (0-2) got an 85-yard TD run by Isaiah Crowell and were up by 20, stunning not only Baltimore but more than 60,000 Cleveland fans who came expecting more of the same from the home team.As the Browns built their lead, there was plenty of frustration on Baltimores sideline where wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. and linebacker C.J. Mosley threw their helmets and defensive coordinator Dean Pees huddled his players for a fiery lecture.Flacco was never flustered, but he envisioned Ravens fans aat home sitting there cussing on the couch.dddddddddddd. Were doing the same thing on the bench. He did something about it, though, as the Ravens trimmed Clevelands lead to 20-12 at halftime before Flacco connected with Wallace on a 17-yard TD pass early in the third to pull Baltimore within one. Justin Tucker then kicked two of his three field goals in the fourth quarter and C.J. Mosley intercepted McCown at the goal line with 13 seconds left.It was a good way to end it with the defense making the last play, Mosley said. Thats not the way you want to start. Here are some other things we learned as Baltimore improved to 15-2 against Cleveland under coach John Harbaugh.CENTER INJURED: Erving was immobilized and taken by ambulance to University Hospitals after succumbing to cramps late in the fourth quarter. The Browns announced Sunday night that Erving had a pulmonary contusion. Its likely he will miss several games.John Greco filled in on the final few snaps for Erving, a first-round pick who struggled last season.PITTAS RETURN: Slowed by hip injuries the past two seasons, Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta appears to be back in form after finishing with nine catches for 102 yards.Pitta twice dislocated his hip and his absence has deprived Flacco of one of his favorite targets. He looked like himself, Flacco said. I think hes going to get more and more comfortable as the year goes on. We just have to keep him healthy.KESSLER ON DECK: If McCown cant play, the Browns will turn their offense over to rookie Cody Kessler. The former USC standout said he has a better grasp of Clevelands offense and will be ready if called upon.PRYORS PENALTY: The Browns may have gotten another bad break when wide receiver Terrelle Pryor was called for taunting with 27 seconds left, preventing McCown from taking a few shots at the end zone from closer range.Pryor caught a pass while tumbling out of bounds at Baltimores 10, and as he got up, he flipped the ball toward Ravens defensive back Lardarius Webb, brushing his shoulder. While it appeared trivial, a sideline official felt it warranted a penalty and nullified the 20-yard pickup.Pryor felt he was innocent.Im just saying theres other people that can catch a ball and spin it and look at players in the face, Pryor said. But if I get up and drop the ball -- clearly I wasnt trying to drop it on nobody.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
MORAGA, Calif. -- Randy Bennett has a long list of scorers on Saint Marys, so thats the least of his worries. When his Gaels get big leads and the bench comes in, now the challenge is sustaining a defensive tempo that this group had last season in regularly holding teams to 40 percent shooting and below.Saint Marys is making strides on both ends, even gaining some good practice against a zone defense Wednesday night.Jock Landale had 15 points and 13 rebounds and the 20th-ranked Gaels jumped to a quick lead they never relinquished to beat Western Kentucky 73-51.The defense is coming along. As a team, its something we practice every day. Coach, as he said, harps on it quite a lot, Emmett Naar said. If we can just improve a bit each day, hopefully toward the end of the season well be pretty good.Evan Fitzner scored eight of his teams first 12 points as the Gaels took control from the tip. We got ahead at Indiana State and played with a lead, but this was a different animal here.Bennett has challenged his team recently to play with more defensive fire, and the Gaels shut down Pancake Thomas. A graduate transfer in his first season with the Hilltoppers, Thomas shot 2 of 8 for four points and missed his three tries from 3-point range after getting a season-best 22 points in a win over Indiana State on Sunday. The Hilltoppers shot 37.5 percent and 5 of 17 from 3-point range to lose for the fifth time in six games. The last couple games weve been able to play our bench and getting those guys to get some reps and try and be as good defensively and as consistent as the first six or seven guys is a challenge. Weve got to get better, Bennett said. Sometimes we sub, we take a dip down defensively. That cant happen.Saint Marys guard Joe Rahon limped off with a right leg injury with 4:37 left before halftime then returned just before intermission and wound up matching his career high with 10 assists. In the first meeting between the programs, Saint Marys jumped to a 7-0 lead in the opening 2:27 and 12-2 then never looked back.BIG PICTUREWestern Kentucky: The Hilltoppers 24 first-half points matched their season low. ... All it took was a speech from the countrys ex-coach and a couple of goals from its latest wonder kid.A call of support from Luiz Felipe Scolari and goals by promising youngster Gabigol helped put Brazil back on track at the Olympic tournament -- the hosts defeated Denmark 4-0 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals and keep alive their hopes of winning the gold medal for the first time.Brazil was in danger of an embarrassing elimination at home after struggling in the first two games, when frustrated fans jeered Neymar. Fans chanted Marta was better than Neymar several times across soccer host cities.Brazilian Olympic coach Rogerio Micale, in his first high-profile job, admitted he was struggling. He got some help from Scolari, a man who has dealt with both success and adversity. Scolari was Brazils coach when it won the 2002 World Cup and when it was eliminated by Germany in the historic 7-1 loss in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup at home.I got a call from Felipao. He showed his support, wished me luck, said he had trust in the work being done, the 47-year-old Micale said. It was a great honor to know that he was worried with this situation all the way back in China (where Scolari coaches). It shows what a great coach and what a great man he is.Scolari suffered through similar difficulties before the 2002 World Cup, when Brazils national team didnt have the support of the home fans after almost failing to qualify for the tournament in South Korea and Japan. He is a coach with experience, Micale said. He understands this moment that we were going through. He wanted to encourage us.Micale said he has also been getting support from senioor team coach Tite, who made an important visit to the team after the disappointing scoreless draws against South Africa and Iraq.ddddddddddddIts always important to have Tite around us, Micale said. His experience is always welcomed. The easy-going Micale has been Brazils under-23 coach but was not expected to be head of the team at the Olympics. He was given the job when Dunga was fired and replaced by Tite, who didnt want to take over both national teams.Micale said he was relieved after Brazil escaped elimination with the win against Denmark on Wednesday, with goals from Gabigol, Luan and Gabriel Jesus, another promising star who was yet to show his potential despite high expectations. Gabriel Jesus reached a multimillion-dollar deal to transfer to Manchester City just before the tournament began, while Gabigol is expected to soon make the move to European soccer. Both players had struggled in the first two matches.Barcelonas Neymar also played better Wednesday. The effort was there in the first matches; we tried hard but the results didnt happen, Neymar said. This time, we had more patience and we were able to score goals and get the result we wanted. The fans want to see goals and that didnt happen in the previous games, so they get a little upset, but they need to understand that we are not here to joke around. We are here to play football and do our best.Brazil, which will play Colombia in the quarterfinals Saturday in Sao Paulo, remains the main favorite to win the Olympic gold, which is the only major trophy the five-time World Cup champions havent won in soccer. College football season is divided into four very distinct months:?September: The month where teams start to get a reality check on how good they are -- or are not. Most teams play one strong intersectional game and a couple of conference games. After that you pretty much have no illusions about your football team.?October: The football equivalent to golfs Moving Day. October is when the legitimate contenders put themselves into position to make a championship run.?November: They remember what you do in November. The month usually includes a big rivalry game and a conference game that will make the difference in winning the division.?December: If youre still alive on Championship Saturday, the first week of December is when you play your way into the playoff. So we have finished September and the SEC championship race is beginning to take shape. On Saturday October arrives. The preliminaries are over. Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron, who previously served as an interim head coach at USC, has vowed that he will get the Tigers excited about playing again, starting with Saturdays home game with Missouri (2-2, 0-1) on SEC Network. The key is whether or not Orgeron and his new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger can breathe some life into a listless offense that has only averaged 16.6 points against three FBS opponents.Orgeron has insisted that the slate has been wiped clean and that Saturday represents the beginning of a new eight-game season. Were just going to coach them like heck and see what happens, said Orgeron.??Alabama tunes up for the toughest schedule in the countryWith all due respect to Kentucky (2-2, 1-1), we do not expect the Wildcats to keep it close when they go to No. 1 Alabama (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday. In fact, this will be the 40th time Kentucky has met Alabama. Kentucky has won just twice (1922, 1997) and the Wildcats have never won in Tuscaloosa.Kentucky stumbled out of the gate with losses to Southern Miss (44-35) and Florida (45-7) but has picked up a little momentum with two straight wins over New Mexico State (62-42) and South Carolina (17-10).Its going to be a tremendous challenge for us, said Mark Stoops, the head coach at Kentucky. Here is where Alabama is. The Crimson Tide played one of their most complete games of the season last week beating Kent State 48-0. After this week Alabama faces the toughest stretch of any team in football as they play at Arkansas (3-1), at Tennessee (4-0), Texas A&M (4-0) at home, and then at LSU (2-2) on Nov. 5.??Ditto for TennesseeThe Volunteers played what I believe was their best half of football in 10 years when they rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat Florida 38-28. Now Tennessee (4-0, 1-0), which has been waiting to get back into this position for a long time, has a clearly marked path to the SEC championship. But just because the path is clear it doesnt mean it will be easy.We have to build on what weve done, said coach Butch Jones. We dont take a step back.Tennessee goes to Georgia (3-1, 1-1), a place where the Vols havent won since 2006. Georgia is a team with its back to the wall after getting hammered last week at Ole Miss (45-14). If Tennessee can beat the Bulldogs, it will go to Texas A&M undefeated next week and then host Alabama on Oct. 15.But for those games to be huge, Tennessee has to take care of business at Sanford Stadium.??Looking for a dark horse? Take a closer look at Texas A&MRight now No. 1 Alabama looks to be head and shoulders above the rest of the SEC. But if youre looking around for a team that could upset the Crimson Tide, take a look at the Aggies (4-0, 2-0), who go to South Carolina (2-2, 1-2 SEC) on Saturday. The Aggies were most impressive last week in pulling away from a good Arkansas team to win 45-24. Texas A&M has significantly improved in the areas it wanted to this season: The Aggies lead the SEC in rushing (269.25 ypg) and are fifth in rushing defense (125.25) after finishing 13th last season. Texas A&M held Arkansas to only 120 rushing yards on 40 carries. In one stretch of the game Arkansas had seven snaps inside the Aggies 10-yard line and did not score a touchdown. After South Carolina, they face two other teams that are currently undefeated. They host Tennessee next week and go to Alabama on Oct. 22.Here are some other quick storylines for Saturday:Arkansas (3-1, 0-1) is still juggling its offensive line against Alcorn State (1-2). This will be Arkansass yearly game in Little Rock. The contract to play one Arkansas game per year at War Memorial Stadium ends after the 2018 season.Auburn (2-2, 1-1) steps out of the conference to host Louisiana-Monroe (1-2). The Tigers won an emotional 18-13 game against LSU last week and continue to work on their red zone offense. Auburn had six trips into the LSU red zone last week and did not score a touchdown.Florida (3-1, 1-1) goes to Vanderbilt (2-2, 0-1) where it hopes to get back on track after losing to Tennessee. Remember this: Vanderbilts best player is running back Ralph Webb, who hails from Gainesville, Fla. He had 118 yards rushing last season when Florida needed a late field goal to beat the Commodores 9-7.Ole Miss (2-2, 1-1) has a revenge game when it hosts Memphis (3-0). The Rebels lost to the Tigers 37-24 last season at the Liberty Bowl. Ole Miss will then have a week off before going to Arkansas on Oct. 15. Josh Jackson Super Bowl Jersey . AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan is uncertain what can be done to help Ben Cousins, saying the fallen stars battle with drug addiction is as bad as ever.McLachlan says the AFL is prepared to help Cousins in any way - but hes just not sure how.He (Cousins) has had a terrible struggle for a number of years now and I understand that at the moment it is as bad as ever, McLachlan told reporters in Perth on Thursday.Drug addiction is a huge challenge for the community. We will do whatever we can. Part of the issue is what to do is not evident. But be very clear: the AFL will take on whatever role we can to help Ben.We are in a much better place to have the right type of relationships (with clubs) and to understand the issues.McLachlan arrived in Perth for a visit coinciding with West Coasts celebrations of its 2006 premiership victory, which some say is tainted because of off-field drug issues suffered by some of the Eagles premiership-winners.Earlier this week, Cousins was collected by police after he was reportedly directing traffic on a busy Perth road. The Bronwlow medalliist and former Eagles captain was incoherent and was taken to hospital for observation before being released.ddddddddddddesponding to recent comments from Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett that the AFL gave him an inquisition, rather than assistance, when he initially sought help for Cousins, rather than any assistance, McLachlan said the AFL had come a long way in the past decade.McLachlans visit to Perth coincides with West Coasts celebrations of its 2006 premiership victory, which some say is tainted because of off-field drug issues affecting some of the Eagles premiership-winners.McLachlan said he believed the Eagles side that beat Sydney in the 2006 grand final was a well-coached, strong-running and great AFL team.Clearly there are some individuals who have had significant challenges since. That is clearly disappointing on a number of fronts, he said. But I dont believe it takes anything away from the merit and significance of the win. ' ' '
